Presidential Review at PCGS

Would anyone know the normal waiting period for a Presidential review on some coins which were originally sent to PCGS on Express service? Thanks.

  • Doesn't really matter how sent originally - except for how much they charge for pres. review (see below). Site says approx 10-20 days. When 1st introduced it was 2-5 days. WHAT A SHOCK image

Edited to add: From their site see below

** $5 Walk-Thru and Show, $10 Express, $20 Regular in addition to regular grading fee. You must send a copy of your original PCGS invoice.

It's really a game of chance. DH sometimes takes them from the top, sometimes from the middle...he does them when he has time. I have had them in 1 day and in 20 days!! Im 1 for 3!! That's not too bad. I just hope he doesn't remember them in 3 months when I try again!image

I agree, the timing is variable and is not guaranteed. IMO the adantage to Presidential Review is that you get an explanation of why the coin did not upgrade. I have gotten upgrades both through the regular process and through presidential review. My success rate is about the same, and frankly, not very high.

  • Which brings up the point, Greg, why doesn't PCGS tell us the grade they think a coin IS when they don't cross it? Aren't we paying for their opinion of the grade? If our opinion matches or is exceeded by theirs and then it is placed in a PCGS holder. If not, shouldn't we ALSO still get their opinion of the grade it actually IS and not an inferred opinion of what grade(s) it isn't? image

They announced that they would do this awhile back, but then submissions increased and they said it was more important to get our coins back quickly, so they abandoned the idea, apparently. It would be nice to know if they think a coin in another holder has been cleaned or if it simply didn't make the grade.

  • I agree with RBinTex. I'd like to know just what grade they would give a coin that did not cross.

I think RB in Texas has a good point as well. Sometimes they will tell you if you call them after the coins have been graded. Why not send the question to David Hall on the Q&A forum. He answers questions every Tuesday night.

What does it cost to send the coin in for review if you already had it sent via express?
Is it just $10 plus shipping and the original invoice? OR is it another 50+10+shipping?
    OR is it another 30+10+shipping? I'm confused...image

You guys should search the archives on this one. A couple of years ago we raised cane about this issue and Hall said they were going to start putting their grade on them. That has yet to happen.

  • I have never had a coin upgrade under presidential review, but have cracked 3 that were put through the review that upgraded when resubmitted. Go figure. I think they just come up with an excuse to why it graded the way it did. I have had presidential review coins take 3 months as well.

I'm 1 for 1 on Presidential Reviews, but that was a freebie I got from DH before they actually started the service. I strongly doubt I'll ever pay for one because I agree with clackamas that the best route to take is a standard regrade.
    When in doubt, don't.

I am 0 for 8 tries on the presidential review. I feel

they drop the grade by one point on general principle.

You darn well need a coin with a two point potential

to get a chanceof a one point upgrade.

My problem was not "presidential review" but "presidential PREview." At Long Beach a few years ago, DH checked over a few of my raw coins to pick the best for submission (I was going for DCAMs) and NONE came back DCAM and some didnt even make CAM. He blamed the "light" in the convention center floor. Hmmm. cheers, alan mendelson

I'm waiting for my first Presidential Review as well. So far, it's been 30 calendar days.
  • I am also 0 for 6 on the review, may be a waste of money

Presidential review is just a game. If you are paying for PCGS's REASON for the grade they give, well that's one thing. If you THINK that this process will get you a higher grade, then I think you are just playing the game. Steveimage
