Which One To Buy? That is the Question!

Okay, so you have an opportunity to purchase a RARE coin. The price is high, but you might be willing to go for it. It would be a fantastic addition to your collection - a highlight coin. The coin has an incredible pedigree and is super trophy material. PCGS certified of course and very PQ.

In the alternate, you have an opportunity to purchase another RARE coin, though less "known" to the collecting community (more of a sleeper) for it's rarity. The price for this coin is signficantly lower than the other and would be a terrific find for your cabinet (though less bragging rights of the first). This coin is also PCGS certified and PQ. So, do you want the high maintenance gorgeous trophy city girl? - or - do you want the damn beautiful country girl who has yet to fully blossom? image matteproof

I couldn't answer that without knowing what the coins are. That would be the basis for my decision

    Good question.

I honestly couldn't answer that one, though. It's a tough call.

I'd choose whichever one was the one I was looking for or wanting most. Or whichever one would be much harder to find again. Or just get both.

image But really, it does depend on what coin it is... an 1804 Dollar Original Strike... or an 1802 Half-Dime... Half-Dime anytime...

  • Hi all. Thank you for the terrific (and funny) replies. No particular coin(s) specifically. This is more of a hypothetical. So, do we buy the steak or do we buy the sizzle? Doesen't the steak always taste better when we here it sizzle? Or, is it just the steak that tastes so good (the sizzle is just hype?). Thanks. imagematteproof

    both

  • The latter. The more expensive coin probably has little upside potential left, and the market for it is probably much smaller. While the bragging rights for the latter coin aren't much atm, they will come in the future along with a larger appreciation in value. Leave the trophy coins for the rich guys. Think of the two coins as women. Do you want the one who looks good on your arm, but is otherwise of little interest, or the one who is less attractive but makes you happy??

  • Hi,
    I'd buy the second coin.

    Country girl for me.

I'm not into flash or bragging rights. (otherwise I would post all my restored date nickels) image

It really depend on which coin would give you the most satisfaction.

If we are talking about which coin will retain value the best, that is

I'd go for the "city girl."

Chances are the city girl will always be sweet. The county girl may never blossom.

  • Do both fit equally well into the collection? I like buying things that are not in the spotlight. Fashions change and the less expensive coin may become more popular in the future. However if I were collecting dollars and the first coin was a dollar while the second wasn't than I'd have to keep the collection focused and buy the first one.

Hi cohodk. True. However, it is possible that the city chick could lose her "sweetness" and with it her trophy status. Even if the country girl never blossoms, she is still darn sweet in the meantime and cost a heck of a lot less. Thanks cohodk! imagematteproof

Hi Carl. Yes, assume both coins would fit perfectly in a collection. It's really just a matter of; do you pay big money for the trophy or do you pay far less and get another potential "future trophy." Thanks Carl. image matteproof
