Seems funny, but I suppose in the grand scheme of things, collecting small glass balls is no stranger than collecting small chunks of cardboard with pictures on them.
  • Small pieces of cardboard with pictures of other grown men on them.......suddenly my kid's marble collection all makes sense.......

When I was a kid, marbles had an enchanting effect, rather like baseball cards. Some of us kids just never grow up!

I was at my mother-in-law's a few weeks ago and she handed me a little bag of stuff - mostly some old lighters and money clips - to list on Ebay for her. The deal was we would split whatever sold. To my surprise, one of the money clips went for $57, and last night one of the lighters closed at $107.50 !

On topic, she had this big tin with about 500 marbles in it she wanted me to take. She was rattling off all of these strange names for the different marbles. She had these since she was a kid (she's 82). I didn't take them, but after seeing this auction close at over a thousand bucks...I think it's time for me to brush up on the world of marbles!! Thanks for the link. Just goes to show....per the old adage ...one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Thats like me- I have sold so many odds and ends that I would have thought had no value. My father and I have a huge collection of hunting, fishing and sport related collectibles. We usually don't pay alot for it but whenever we can get a cool piece for a few bucks at a flea market or garage sale we get it. A few years ago I stumbled onto and auction for a shotgun shell box that was getting $10. I couldn't believe that...long story short, within a few weeks we had dumped all our reloaded shells into plastic bags and sold 200+ boxes and made $2500. Pretty good when you can turn dirty old shell boxes into a high end shotgun lol.

I saw a small segment on marble collecting on one of the antique shows on TV - believe it was the Kovell's show - anyway - they even reproduce or counterfeit the really expensive marbles - so everything in the collectibles world is a target for scammers. Here is a link for anyone who knows nothing about them. I know less! image

    DirtyHarry,

You are welcome. Actually I found this by accident. Sometimes I search on eBay for Master Collection as in "Yankee" or "Jordan" Master Collection. This Marble Master Collection came up.

One time I saw an antique fishing lure sell on eBay for $35,000+. I think someone posted it on this board.

Great. Yet another thing I had when I was a kid that has long since vanished that I now see on ebay selling for a ton. I'm officially never throwing anything out ever again.

There is a role in this world for pack rats. Some of us never understand them until they leave us and we are stuck dealing with their possessions and selling them on ebay and are just amazed at what some things go for. God bless them.

I know clutter is bad and takes up space, but once you strategically organize everything and label storage boxes and stack them somewhere dry and safe, like in a good clean garage, it should not be an inconvenience to just hang on to stuff. You never know what could appreciate in value.

    Hi Everyone !,

I am new to the forum and have about 6,386 card collecting topics I would like to discuss, but I could not help adding my two cents here. Card collecting is my passion, but I have also dabbled in other collectibles, marbles among them. Yes, I am a pack rat.

I am very surprised PSA or somebody hasn't started grading and encapsulating marbles. Judging from the sales on eBay, allot of people collect marbles.

I've seen some marbles sell for BIG bucks.
The "Mickey Mantle" of marbles are Christensen Guinea Marbles. They were only made for a few years and
are truly tiny works of art and extremely rare (kind of like a 52 Mantle) in high grade. They sell for at least 200-300 on ebay, some for over 1,000 - for a single marble !!! The funny thing is, millions of these marbles must have been made, but hardly any of them exist today (kind of like a 52 Mantle).

    Anyone collect matchbooks ?

  • How can you tell (and be certain) that a marble is from a specific manufacturer? Are there marks, or are designs such that cannot be duplicated elsewhere?

At least baseball cards are dated and have the manufacturers name on them (usually).

I dont mean to turn this into a marble forum , but other hobbies are always interesting.

Lord, it's hard to read too much with those colors changing all the time. I bet he experienced the 60"s!
  • That website was extremely interesting. Now I have to keep my eyes open for something else when out and about.

  • We used to fry marbles. Make 'em crack inside. Looked neat.

I remember the fishing lure. The guy who put it up had no idea what he had. He was hoping to get $10. Now that was a nice surprise!

I actually remember marbles were THE collectible back in 8th grade or so. We took a year off from cards and we all played marbles. Sort of like flipping cards where the winner would get the other guys marble. This would have been 1980 or so in Los Angeles. It was quite fun. Much like flipping cards you would not play with your good ones or even the one you might be gambling because marbles break pretty easily of course. Anybody else remember doing this?
  • How can they tell the difference between vintage marbles and new marbles?

Wish I still had the ones from when I was a kid.

Marbles are uniques to thier maunfacturers. There are subtle differences that collectors learn to look for.

My mother in law has lost her marbles....I now have them. As there has been some mild curiosity in this OT thread, I'll let you know how I make out selling them. Regards.
