Most people who know nothing about coins would not go through the trouble of having a collection graded and then dispose of them at a slow rate especially if most look like this one.

I dont know how true the story is, but it is interesting. From what I can tell, the coin shown is reasonably advertised. You may or may not agree with the grade, but the auction seems on the up and up to me. Time will tell when it comes to the more valuable coins.

How far off can you be when you put up a G-4 coin (yes it could be AG3, but it is a subjective matter)

The story may be a scam, but somebody went to great lengths to appraise this stuff, if every coin comes with a card like the few that currently listed. If the 1909 Barber Half is representative (appraised value = $250), then the real value of the total collection is likely closer to $15K.

I don't know. If here attitude toward him in married life is anything like her attitiude in the auctions, even though he gave up the house; the cars, and his coin collection, it still sounds like he got the better end of the deal.


Oh, and my personal opinion is this is an "estate sale" type of scam.

I've seen similar auctions for non-coin items get a lot of publicity on message boards - a "ex-husband" selling the wedding dress, the "ex-wife" selling a huge video game collection. They always have a story of revenge included in the auction.

I think the story is just a marketing gimmick. For me the clincher is putting "divorce sale" in the title of each auction.

It seems to me that this guy wanted to upgrade his collection as well as get the "trophy wife". That 1853 half dollar remarkably eluded the melt down of silver of the early 1980's.

From the tone of her ebay ad, he is lucky that she wasn't more vindictive.

I'm not saying that I feel that this is legit or not but this statement is crazy. My wife has never bought or sold anything on ebay. If I ever pi$$ her off enough to divorce me and she were to get my collection, this would be the first place she would go to sell it off. Zero feedback and $150,000 worth of coins. It's not unrealistic at all.

I know nothing specific of this situation. However, it would not surprise me if:

1. The seller is a man making up all the story about a divorce.
2. The appraisal company is "owned" or made up by the man or woman selling this stuff.
3. The coins are worth far less than $100K

Just look at the barber half. It looks from the poor photograph to be VG or borderline fine in my judgement. I estimate that coin to be worth $10-18 (not the $250 stated in the discription) and surprisingly it already has a bid over $30. Could this be a shill bidder, too? It will be an interesting and entertaining scenario to follow.

give her an A for effort......interesting....maybe true....seems like a lot of work to sell em off piece by piece.....just so you know a real appraiser would disqualify himself from purchase.....cant appraise something and then buy it....but a real appraiser would have to offer additional information.....I have done quite a few of "divorce" estimates....but I have not taken some because sometimes the lawyer who wants it done wants it down same day with very high values....sorry I give honest numbers not some crazy value.....might be worth it for board members to keep looking and see if anything good comes up....selling em at 10% value doesnt mean anything since true values will shoot up.....lets wait and see
