Hmmmmmm.... perfect feedback and a 10 day return policy!! But that is a lot of cash for a raw coin... does anybody know if that kind of toning pattern looks original for that issue??

  • With this kind of a raw coin auction, my only question is, Why isn't it slabbed?
Does it have some kind of a problem preventing it from being slabbed?

I don't collect silver, but those surfaces just don't look right to me.

If someone who knows anything about the coin market sells a potentially very valuable item raw, there's a reason. Yes, there are still some raw diamonds in the rough out there, but if you regularly sell coins, you know that if it's really a problem-free gem, you're costing yourself a LOT of money by selling it raw. So there must be a reason. I wonder if this one was BB'd at one point.

There are still people out there that do inherit older collections from passed away loved ones. I think there are still many beautiful coins from these older collections that have never been entombed in plastic. Which brings up the age old debate here on the forum are you buying the coin or the coffin it comes in? OR is it a great coin because it's been slabbed?? Many an experienced collector has passed over a slabbed coin graded by the big guns because it didn't appeal to them. Sometimes I feel as collectors we get to caught up on the numbers on a slab than appreciating the coin therein IMHOimage

And, not everybody thinks coins should be slabbed.

This isn't someone selling an estate. This is a seller with a year + ebay coin selling experience who deals with slabs and quotes greysheet in some of his auctions. If this was a legit MS67, he'd have it certified and make a ton more money. Anyway it looks messed with.

I agree with you Iwog. Greed makes people think that 99 raw coins out of 100 are better to pass on, but this one is the exception. I just think that is crazy. "Don't buy raw" is my motto, and if you just have to part with your money for a raw coin, don't do it at a price more than X (set a limit, $50?).

The RISK of paying 1,500 for this coin, and not getting that much value in return, is insane.

I agree. But this is someone who sells a lot of coins -- it's not a complete amateur selling coins who inherited Grandpa's estate. When they are sold by people who would clearly know that a piece like this should be slabbed before sale if problem-free, you can pretty safely assume there's a reason KNOWN TO THE SELLER why it's not "entombed in plastic."

Isn't the coin pictured a 1925-s not 26-s as stated in auction title.

It's amazing to see crap sell and good stuff not sell on ebay.

All the raw (and for that matter slabbed) coins this person is selling this week are definitively AT...very sad.

A buyer would have to have a hole in the head to buy a coin of that value raw on eBay.

There is something not quite right looking about that image.

Perhaps it's the image itself, but I'm not willing to spend 1500 to 4000 to find out.

If that coin is as advertised, why not a holder??? $30 to quadruple the sales value is just plain smart business....bells and whistles should always go off when a big money coin is offered raw....I do not want to hear that the seller does not understand the value of certification?????image
