Was high bidder when seller pulled auction.
Damn jerk. Bids didn't get as high as he thought and he bailed. Can I report him for this???

Lincoln Wheats (1909 - 1958) Basic Set - Always Interested in Upgrading!
Why do you want a counterfeit 16-D dime?
And I wanted it anyway because even if it was a fake, it would have made a very nice hole filler.

I meant to fill the empty hole reserved for the 16-D, not some other coin.
Rules are rules, but all else being equal, it would be nicer if they enforced them MORE, not LESS, on scammers who try to pass them off to unsuspecting bidders as genuine.

<< <i> The thing is he didn't say with absolute certainty that it was a counterfeit, just that he suspected it was. It might not have been. For all we know that could have been a genuine BU 1916-D and I could have picked it up with a hundred dollar bid. >>
You're kidding right?
This is just the sort of scam an unscrupulous seller would run betting that some naive collector would think EXACTLY WHAT YOU JUST STATED.
DON'T BE FOOLISH!
<< <i>It doesn't look like you were the high bidder. >>
Yep. It looks like someone took out his $100 bid with a $110 bid two minutes before the bids were cancelled. I doubt the seller pulled it -- I'd be more than happy for someone to take a fake off of hands over a hundred bucks.

<< <i>Isn't it illegal to possess and therefore sell counterfeit coins? >>
No. It is illegal to sell them as genuine as that is intent to defraud, or to spend them as that is also intent to defraud. To sell them as counterfeits seems to be legal. On the other hand they DO have to be surrendered to government agents if they ASK for them.
howsheltie was the high bidder, unless of course you had another one of those bidding errors when you didn't confirm your bid.
But don't worry - there are plenty of other sellers trolling for bidders who are going to make a fortune buying their fakes. Greed is good.

Looking for Santa Claus again?
<< <i>and someone advertises clearly and honestly as a fake, asks almost nothing for it, has bidders who want it as a fake...and they pull it. >>
eBay didn't pull it, the seller cancelled the auction. Since it was bid to over $100 - plenty for a fake - and he still cancelled, it's pretty obvious he was looking to hook a sucker.

There will be plenty other opportunities to buy fake 16-Ds--do not despair.
And what do you mean, my judgement will improve? I bid assuming with 99% certainty that it was a very nice looking fake. You never know about these things, though.

I'm sure the seller pulled it. When eBay pulls an auction, all you get is "invalid item". You can't see the auction page anymore.

The fact that you say "You never know about these things, though" says it all.
This auction is a textbook example on how to run a legitimate scam (there's an oxymoron)!

Perhaps not.
