Got beat on the Bottee medal-not happy

medal auction

imageimage I figured go 15% over $100; with a previous high of roughly $82 that would put me 40% over previous auction highs on the same item. Wasn't enough!

Taught me two things- the first I knew-don't go wishy-washy over a prime piece-leave nothing in reserve: I would have gone another $20 for that quality. 2nd- Be around at auction end-happened I was on my way home from work when it was all over.

Ah well, 'till next time.

Aw, P.S. should have known that particular example would draw strong buyers who knew what they were doing.

Sorry Laurent, but all's fair in love and eBay.

That is a bummer Laurent! Sometimes eBay blows!

BTW - Do you know anything about a 1916 Verdun medal with a Joan of Arc looking chick on the obverse and a castle on the reverse?

I'm sorry you did not win it.imageimageimage If it's any consolation, I've never encountered either of the two bidders who outbid you; you outbid "the usual suspects." I have not found that any "formula" successfully guides you on bidding on medals on eBay. A lot of this is due to the lack of useful price guides, which makes the market much more volatile than for coins.

Naaah, I don't. But I do feel like I got burned at the stake. In other words, burned by my mis-stake...

Aethelred, by any chance is this the medal you are enquiring about?

This is a "Verdun Medal" designed by Seraphim Emile Vernier. It was created by the City Council of Verdun in 1920 and it was given to personalities that visited the town shortly after the war’s end. A 37mm diameter table medal, it was struck in both silver and bronze. I have not seen a silver one. This bronze one of mine is rather matte in finish. I haven't acquired others to see if that's the usual way it is finished. The bronze Verdun Medals are fairly common, but not always in great condition. It's fairly low-relief. Mine is choice mint and cost me $20, which was lowball for sure, but it's best to wait for a nice one. The problem is that the usual pics you see on eBay make it difficult to determine how nice one is.

My formula is 20% over the previous high. However, I suspect that the winner really wanted that medal and was waiting until the last moment to put in his/her final bid. The winner was probably determined by the speed of the connections.
