Dassier's Edward III

It seems everybody is delving a little "deeper" into the Dark, adding older issues to their collections. image Here's an early 18th Century medal of Edward III by Jean Dassier. It is one of a series on the kings and queens of England which Dassier produced. A well-regarded master of portrait medals, Dassier is eagerly collected and I'm amazed I managed to snatch this away for a mere $51. Nice things happen on the Dark Side! image

Thanks, Shep!! All of Dassier's medals in this series are great. I almost went for one of Elizabeth I, but there was a hit to the middle of her forehead and, since the scan was dark, I wasn't sure what other problems might have been hidden.

You know, it does seem a shame that men today have to wear suits and ties to work when guys back then got really all decked out. image

That is very nice, I too like the high reliefimage
  • Mark, very nice medal! One question, what is the full translation of the inscription around Ed! I see, "Ed III D G ANG FR ET HIB REX" Is that ED III By the Grace of God King of England France and Spain?

Almost correct ... the "HIB" is for "Hibernia" so the translation would be "King of England, France and Scotland."

Now, where's MSD61? "HIB" (Hibernia) refers to Ireland laddie, not Scotia.
  • Sweet medal......I'll have to check out the links to see more. I think I will stick with coins and not delve into the world of medals.......you don't need the bidding competition anyway image

The Dark Mouse is correct it would read "Edward III, by the grace of God, king of England, France and Ireland."

It is interesting to note that the English kings claimed France from the time of Edward III until George III gave up the claim in 1801.
