Thanks CoinAddict. My local coin dealer sells them for spot plus a smaller spread than GAE's and CML's. If I'm going to buy bullion, I'll take an Unc. St. George anyday.

It's actually Australian, the S mintmark refers to Sydney.

Right. Sovereigns were minted in various parts of the British empire at the time.

If I'm going to buy bullion, I'll take an Unc. St. George anyday.

It's an excellent choice indeed. However, if you honour us with more frequent visits, you will find out that there's a wide variety of gold, early 20th or late 19th century unc darkside coins that trade for a slight premium over their BV. image

  • I'm always up for a little extra knowledge when I can clear out a spot in my brain. image I see a lot of World gold coins pass through my local shop, but don't know anything about them. St. George and the dragon has always been one of my favorite designs, so I pick them up when I have the chance.

There was also an 1887 Melbourne in VF...maybe XF, but I tend to stick to the Unc's.

I've been hanging out with the forum women and have found that I have to make sure that they know when I'm making a joke.

This is where the confusion starts. It is a 1910 British sovereign, it just happens to be Sydney mint, it is still a British Sovereign.

There are such things as Australian Sovereigns but they are a totally different coin. They say Australia on the back!

Australian sovereigns were made for circulation in Australia. Sydney mint British sovereigns were made for circulation throughout the Empire, i suppose where ever they got shipped. Alot probably stayed in Australia but no doubt some made it to Britain, some to Africa, some to India.

There is a difference, i think the best way to refer to it is as a provincial mint British sovereign.

I added a 1911-C sovereign to my Canadian type set and was told the coin "wasn't really Canadian." I figure since it was made in Canada with Canadian gold, and the mint put them in Canadian coin specimen sets at the time, it's "really Canadian" enough for me.
