    Andy,

I also used to know how to ask: What's your name? How old are you? And, where do you live? But, I forgot.

    Wie heissen sie?

    Wie alt sind sie?

    Wo wohnen sie?

    in ordnung (in order).

Married to a German for six years, lived there for four years, three of which I lived in an apartment with a landlord who only spoke German, neighbors who only spoke German, and a wife who learned most of her English from me. I learned German out of need and want, ended up in two dialects - Rheinlander Deutsche and Platt Deutsche. I could also understand Hoch Deutsche since that's what was on the TV and radio.

    Big buzzer goes "BZZZZZZTTT"

That was the proper form. Familiar form:

    Wie heist du?

    Wie alt bis du?

    Wo wohnst du?

Aha, I can tell you're using an online translator. image

Of course I just realized I spelled two words incorrectly, one wahr, should have been war' from the verb werden, and American is spelled Amerikaner, I guess Rick being my first name makes my fingers move in that direction.
    Prost!

True! Never claimed any differently. Never took the time to learn the language well from the relatives. My last name is Reichert and the wife's last name was Berkheimer. Her dad, who is in his late 80's, still teaches the old Pennsylvania German dialect at classes for those interested in learning it! (PA Dutch, to those who don't know any differently)

Ah, great Ken, my family emigrated from Liechtenstein. Took four years of German, was an exchange student and did some translating on the side. Haven't used it in the last few years so I'm a little rusty, but I love to use it any chance I get. I can also get along in some Schwabisch, and Allemanic dialects.
    Prost!

  • I was stationed in Germany for two years and I speak a mean German when I am ordering food image Other than that, I am not fluent, but I speak a little. My family came over from Palestine Germany in the 1700's so part of my heritage is German.

I was born in West Berlin, came to the States in 1961 when the wall was built, we lived 1/4 mile from the wall. Mom died in 68 haven't spoken a whole lot of german since , I can still communicate but that's about it.

It's been over ten years since I had much of anything to do with the language, but shouldn't coppercoins be using "Sie" instead of "sie", or if not that then maybe the conjugation is off? On the other hand I can no longer speak, write or read German so I'm probably not the one to be doing a spell-check.

Correct, if you write it, Sie is formal you, and sie can mean they, she, or it depending on the conjugation of the verb and location in a sentence. If the person is alot younger than you it's common to use du (also if it's a friend or relative.)

I'm still waiting for a translation of "Verpisst dich!"
    Prost!
