Just back from the New Orleans Mint museum

I was told for years that going to see the old New Orleans Mint was not worth the effort. This time on my recent visit to New Orleans I had some time to kill and wanted to at least say "I was there".

The actual building is still all there and is very impressive. The museum part of it is kind of small but had lots of pictures and some of the equipment actually used at the mint. I thought the small admission fee was well worth the price. It was really cool to be in the building where many of the coins I own were made many years ago.

There is even a small coin shop in the building and of course I had to purchase a New Orleans Morgan that I know I paid a little too much for.

Now the only mint I need to visit is the "P" to say I have been to them all (not counting some of the old gold mints).

Well, the Charlotte one is basically an art museum. Thankfully people actually complained when they contemplated selling their collection of Charlotte coins to buy more stupid paintings.

The "p" mint is not all that exciting, even when they allowed you to tour. Call your Congressman to arrange a visit. No history in the building as it dates all the way back to 1969. The previous one was built around 1900 and do not know what its' fate became.

The New Orleans mint was not too exciting, and is located in the French Quarter at the end of the Market. I enjoyed going to both the Charlotte mint and the Dalonega mint. The Dalonega mint was a trip. It is now located in the basement of an administrative office in the University of North Georgia. It is all nice and modern until they open "the door". Then you see the old entrance to the mint. Very wild.

The Charlotte mint was moved several miles to its new location in 1932. The rear is now the front and the other way around. The current "rear" is the best, with its gold eagle above the entrance.
