OT - No longer a virgin

After all these years working in the computer business I picked up my first computer virus today, the latest version of MyDoom. Nasty little bugger it is.

I routinely send and receive attachments via email with people around the world as part of my job. I've seen all kinds of viruses arrive as attachments before, often before the anti-virus software companies have gotten the word out about the latest "bug". This is the first one that didn't set off alarms in my head - until I clicked on the attachment to open it up. As soon as I opened it up I could see the full file name and knew I was caught. image

This latest one comes as an email from your mailer system stating that an email from you did not reach all the recipients. Our company email always sends an attachment that you have to open to see which address(es) were not correct. Since I had just sent an email to a list of people I was suckered into opening it to see who had changed email addresses.

Be careful out there!

I hate when that happens. You were able to get rid of it i hope?

Haven't got rid of the bugger yet. Seemed like a good idea to unplug the PC and go home early. image
It seems that you get about 5 minutes after rebooting the PC before the mass mailing part of the virus takes over your CPU completely. It corrupts some Windows DLLs, tries to get rid of your virus protection, modifies the Registry and drops various files onto your harddrive. Hopefully by tomorrow the virus gods will have figured out what needs to be done to get rid of it.

You mean I did the right thing when I deleted all 3 "mail return" messages that downloaded on my last e-mail hookup without opening the attachments? Damn, I don't have a smilie wiping it's forehead!

Somebody posted a thread with this same title over on the Metal Detecting forum, but it was under happier circumstances.

Sorry to hear about YourDoom. image

I understand it knocked out Google, Lycos, and a couple other search engines this morning.

Yep, I couldn't use Google until after lunch. The new virus got into our system at work, but I was already aware of it before the first email showed up. I'd love to string the originator(s) up by their eyelashes.image

  • I received a attachment from a forum member last week with a virus. I have something that prevents me from opening suspicius attachments. Well I recognized the e-mail adress it was from so I bypassed the safety and the next thing I know my system is trying to spit out e-mails faster then I could count. My Norton software stopped them from getting out but it is scary. Funny part is the person I got it from wasn't even aware he had my e-mail address.
