Titanic battle in the upper echelons of proof Kennedy halves.

I watch in envy and awe as the giants jockey for position.

All the while Edson views the action from his perch on the mountain top. image

The PR70DCAM Kennedy Half series is as vibrant and exicting as it has ever been. There are several collectors eyeing Edson's "perch". And, Edson is by no means "resting on his laurels" either image

Kallenberg and LS Brown are constantly jockeying back in forth at 2nd All Time. One nails an upgrade and takes the lead and the next thing you know the other comes back with an upgrade.

The J S Hamilton Collection debuted last month as 4th All Time and he's already upgrading.

The Shadow Angel Collection will likely be the next one to pierce the 70 point GPA level. He's been VERY aggressive since he started. That would bring all of the top five to that level.

    It's fun to watch. image

Those other guys gunning for the top spot had better watch out! I heard Edson's hired a couple of "hired guns" to watch his back. If they get too close, they will hunt them down and "breaka they face!" I also heard he's about to start throwing some rocks down from the top and start an avalanche. Edson's like Richard Green. They both are continuing to upgrade their coins to have not only the #1 set, but also to own the nicest coins. I've seen a couple of coins from a couple of the top Kennedy proof sets in the past and they have been badly hazed over or with spots. Yes the coins were originally 70 DCAM's, but, now what are they? Congratulations to both Edson and Richard for being "class acts!" They truly deserve to be at the top! Rayimage

That's one way to demoralize the competition, add a pop 1/0 coin to your set.

If I was that guy I would be buying 1969 proof sets like there was no tomorrow. Submit all the halves to PCGS and hope for a PR70DCAM. Then ALL coins are Top Pops, end of story (for a while....)
  • I'm trying to do that... with the valuable help of my good friends.

And LS Brown retakes sole possession of 2nd All Time, breaking out of the tie with Kallenberg! Will Kallenberg counter with a move of his own?

  • Analyzing the possible upgrades for Parkekal and Casabrown, Larry (Casabrown) has an advantage in the near future.
Presently Parke need the AH and the 3 SMS.
Larry is 1 point ahead and need the 1966 and 1967 SMS, both 1976, the 2001 and 2002 Clad. Is more easy to him find the 2002 and the 1976s and open 4 points from Parke.
For sure Parke is an enthusiastic collector and I know that he is working hard to re-assume the 2nd even the 1st place, since he needs just 4 coins to do that. Remember that he has the 2001 and Larry doesn’t.
I bet that until the next PCGS award one or both will be tied with me in 1st.
For sure I’m working to avoid it. image
Someone have a 1969 PR70DCAM to offer? image Please call me image

Being clear down in #36 I can only look on in awe. But I like my set to.
  • Hi Kennedy Guys,

    One more strong movement.

Larry (Casabrown) opened 3 points and strengthened his solid second position. image

He included the difficult 1976 Clad. image

I bet that Mitch have some thing with that. image

He is assuming the top position as supplier's of high levels (in grade and quality) Kennedy Proofs. image

  • Out of curiosity,
does anyone know who has the 1969-s PR70 half?

If the Santo's collection was to get a 1969-s PR70 coin would that bump their score higher than the 70.32 PCGS max for this collection?

I wish to congratulate the Santos' gang for their awesome super set again.

  • Hi Earlwbollinger,
The only 1969 PR70DCAM belongs to EBL III, currently set #57. I'm trying to change it.... image
No, the 70,32 as maximum grade possible is a calculation mistake. The correct number is 70,338
Actually my set grade is 70,324 and when I include the last one becomes to 70,338 (probably will appear as 70,34)
    Thanks for your words.

    Edson,

You are correct on two counts. One, I did purchase the 76 from Mitch. And Second, Mitch has become the supplier of many collectors of high grade proofs.

  • Edson and LS Brown are upstanding and outstanding individuals. No matter where either of these two guys are in the ranking, I have had the pleasure of working with both of them while assembling my collection. The coins I have obtained from them have always been of highest caliber. Both of these gentlemen encouraged me to continue to pursue excellence in half dollars, leading through the Kennedy series and eventually to continue on into the earlier proof half series.

The SOLE 1969 in 70DCAM would EASILY exceed $10,000. That figure was openly offered to the first person at least 2 years ago and was never taken up on. This was offered here on the boards and in private, even more money was offered and it was NOT taken. You'd be suprised how many top sets now and/or in the past have what I call inimpaired, to say the least, coins. BUT, they have a TOP RANKED, at least muerically, set. One of the past proof Kennedy sets was sold at auction. I passed on most because of the spots/haze found on the coins. I only barely have a top 20 set. But, the coins I do have are very nice for the grade. Sometimes QUALITY COUNTS! Here's what a lowly ranked set's 1964 coin looks like. Not juiced/toned/hyped. Just a DEERLY contrasted cameos kennedy. And hold the spots/haze!!! Ray nullimageimage

The spoted coin pictured above is not in the top set any more I think. Mr. Kellenber owns both sets and I do not think his standards would allow that. I hope that PCGS got that coin back for review. This is just my opion but Parke does not post to offten so I wanted to clear the haze or spots in this case.
  • raycycaraycyca Posts: 1,655 ✭✭✭
Parke and Eddy have high standards and I'm not talking about them. But, I was refering to others bothy present and in past. Not just in Kennedys, but other sets as well. There some VERY nice proof and MS Kennedy sets that are NOT registered and there would be some changes in the higher rankings if they did become registered. Perhaps later this year one of these sets will come out of the closet? I for one would like to see all the sets come out and play! That would certainly be nice to see, at least in my eyes. I haven't seen the famous 1969 Kennedy in 70DCAM and wonder if it's like the other famous 1964 lincoln?!!!Ray

  • I had the luxury of picking through 2 very nice collections to build my final set. Edson was nice enough to sell me his and I combined that with mine to pick the coins I thought had the best eye appeal. Let me emphasize that I picked the coins that "in my opnion" looked the best. I am sure there are collectors with much more discerning eyes and much more eduated on the grading process, but I kept the ones I liked. The 64 pictured on an earlier post is very nice. I have had the opporutnity to meet with a few PCGS collectors and each has always had their special coins and their own special flair. I think that is what keeps the hobby so interesting.

Yes, I would love to acquire the 69 PR70DCAM, and frankly, I am willing to pay too much for it to finalize my set - although my children have to eat and my wife only gives me so much allowance each month. I will probably have to skip a meal or two and pocket the allowance for a few years to have a shot at it.

  • Hi Parke, Hi Ray, Hi Russ and others Kennedy lovers,

Long time ago since my last access on this Forum.
Was a surprise see an old Thread backing to discussion.
For sure that I need to answer it, at least to put a warm “Howdy” to my good friends.
Is great see my friends talking so passionate about Kennedys.
To be fair, PCGS should “cancel” the 1969 PR70DCAM since nobody saw this coin. Is like the Loch Ness Monster. image
I’m backing very slowly. I bought a coin last week, probably will buy other tomorrow.
My Modern Proof Set still in first totally paralyzed since I didn’t find any coin to upgrade in the last 15 months.
If one of you find something please let me know. Russ when you will decide to sell your baby? image It will be very welcome in my set.
I’m very busy with my business, my Family (now I have a grandchild, borne in USA at a month ago) and my new hobby (and headache) a Golf Course.

A big-hug for all of you.

    Edson
