Photo poll #2: I'm working on a theory.

mgoodm3mgoodm3 Posts: 17,497 ✭✭✭
The last poll surprised me in that the results were pretty even, showing that everybody has different tastes. But, as we all know, my taste in photos is what's important hereimage. Several respected photoguys agreed that #2 was the best for the coin as a mix of contrast and detail. I could have arranged the lighting a bit better to show off what cartwheels there were, but oh well. Here is another coin for inspection and voting that has a different look. The conditions are the same as the previous. combinations of three lights.

I like #2 and #2, but voted for 2 because it shows that the lustre is stronger... both show it's there and plentiful, but the contrast of the second picture says that the lustre really is strong, and not just a lighting effect.

  • #3 shows the luster the best.

I like the exposure of #2 better but it misses a little luster because of the lighting. I voted #3.

All are really great images of the coin though.

3 flatters the coin a little more than the others. 1 makes it look messed with.

I like a little shadow, and voted #1 on the cent.

this coin, #1 is too dark even for me, even #2 is too dark, I like #3 here.

  • I'll break from the crowd and go with #1. I like the dark/light contrast

These photos do not show the true color of the coin like the Indian cent did. When I see a photo like this what is concentrated on is the detail of the coin. These three photos show exactly what different lighting can do for showing detail or not showing the detail. Luster appears in all three photos but a person plain cannot judge luster by a photo.

With all of the jibberish said above it is a real toss up between #2 and #3. Probably #3 is my choice.

Thanks for the learning thread. image

Opps....forgot to say that the true color does not show on my monitor. It may on other folks monitors.

I like the contrast in #1 the best, don't think it makes it look "messed with" at all.

I think it comes down to what shows the details of the coin the best. All lighting is unnatural to a certain extent. which one brings out the natural characteristics of the coin the best is what i'm trying to get at. There's a certain characteristic that I'm honing in on with these polls.

This is a tough one. A toss-up between 2 and 3, but I voted for 2. Reason is I think 2 gives a better cartwheel effect as one would see in person holding the coin under a lamp. 3 shows more of a diffused luster, as seen from multiple light sources.
  • I thought is was tough too and was torn between 2 and 3. I chose 3 because it has less 'flare' off the forehead and 'flare' really bothers me.

#3 shows the luster, marks, and detail. None of the others do all 3.

I prefer the aesthetic look of #2 -- one's choice is partly driven by personal preference, and also determined by what they are trying to accomplish with the photo -- i.e. buy, sell or document (show off in best light) for Registry Set ...
