My 12 year old son, Justin (a dedicate young collector), prepared a positive testimonial for the company recently, which I was informed Teletrade intended to use in some of its upcoming advertising. He mentions some of the "good people" working there now image

Do you guys remember the good ole days when Teletrade used to include a printed auction insert in Coin World and you actually used a phone to bid??? That seems so long ago, yet I still remember it like yesterday.

A place to buy. When time comes to sell, I won't use it unless I have no place to dump (even including the ebay) image

As I recall they held auctions twice a week back then...Wednesday and Friday. That was the last time I dealt with them...must have been early 80's.

  • YES! After a couple times I've found their auction site easy to navigate. The couple problems I did have were self induced. Their customer service, in particular Irma Kane, bent over backwards helping me.

In the REAL good ole days, the auction catalog was a video cassette. I'd pay $100 for one of those. Anyone have one?

I don't remember the video, but remember bidding by phone when there were no PC or internet. Most recently, I have been active buying since the beginning of this year. Their service is teh best - great account control and shipping. I sent one coin back that I thought was not reflective of the description. Teletrade accepted the coin with no issues. 99.99% of the time has been great. I have been especially happy with the high end moderns and the Morgans.

I have no problem with TT as long you understand the following:

for classic coins most are lower end, owned by Spectrum, or other dealers who need to dump them with no other alternative available due to the lower quality.

you are basically paying full retail as the house will certainly have heavy reserves on their old coins. The same coins come up for sale time and time again. This is not an auction but buying from a fixed price list against other retail buyers/dealers.

TT doesn't really care if coins are returned as they can make more money on return fees than on the coins. The returnee pays all postage so it's a free 5% to TT for every coin returned. Even if returned 6x in a year that's a 30% gain + whatever the market price did.

You can occasionally find something worthwhile in a classic coin but the odds are heavily stacked against you. Better chances can be had on ebay from a non-power seller.

    Have fun with your "auctions."

Before they went to scans my return rate with them was over 90%.
It was a wonder I hung in there as long as I did. Even with scans, I am very cautious with what I bid on. I've looked at hundreds of their type coins in the past 18 months and have purchased less than a couple of pieces so far. I have caught them napping 3 times in the past but those things only happen once every 2 years. One time they failed to list the color on some 2 cent pieces (they sold as RB's but were RD's), another time they had no reserve on a better date $20 LIb in 64 and it sold for 50% of CDN, and a third time they had no/or a low reserve on a lot of 5 MS 64 saints that went unprotected. Those few wins barely cover all the effort invested over the years.

I've always thought that their website, including the ability to easily search for coins of interest in upcoming auctions and the ability to get historical price data quickly and efficiently, makes them #1 on that basis. In that regard, I find them far superior to other auction houses, especially Heritage (with all their resources).

I don't often find that Teletrade has coins I am looking for, but when they have and I've won them, I pay on-line and the delivery is prompt and secure. In the couple times I've had to call with questions, I find them responsive and polite!

The quality of coins I've won has been pretty good. I've only felt it necessary to return 3 out of 20 or 25 when no picture of the coin was shown or the picture was a little misleading. Returns were never a problem.

Like buying unseen anywhere, you gotta remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You can return coins (and we all have) but its NOT free and pretty soon its kinda expensive if you're returning a significant portion of your purchases...I've made some of my best and worst buys on TT.....but I keep coming back!
