Going through the process of re-learning how to take pics

With everyone getting new cameras and such, I was fortunate enough to get one of the hand-me-down's but it's a totally different experience than what Im used to with my old 2 mega-pixel point and shoot Mavica - this is the first decent pic that I've taken with the new(er) Olympus C5050 - I still have to figure out the many bells and whistles this thing has - but at 5 mega pixels, the detail is much much better than Im used to - we'll get there image

    Good luck.

I recently got a 5060. There are so many features on the thing that I was a bit overwhelmed at first. I keep the near 300 page manual handy at all times

    great coin pic.
thats going to be my next camera. A five mega pixel atleast.
all i could suggest now for you is lighting techniques.
what type, how many, how bright, positioning etc..

  • Frank, nice pic!!! But, uh, how do I say this........That's a Kennedy!!!image
  • Frank, your new camera has really captured the true butt-ugliness of that coin. Of that series, for that matter.

Unless archiving pics, I don't get the higher megapixel advantage. I have a 4 MP cam. though never use the highest resolution possible. One ends up just reducing size and res. later in photoshop to save and share IMHO. This is within limits of course. K

I agree. A good macro is the thing to have, not megapixels when shooting coins. I don't have a decent macro, unfortunately, and wind up shooting through a magnifying glass sometimes.

The advantage of the additional megapixels is the amount of detail that you capture vis-a-vie the size of your picture. The picture above is actually only about 2/3 rds the original size that the camera delivered. That being the case, I had more than enough room to reduce and maintain a nice crisp look. With my old 2 megapixel camera, often times I would want to increase the size to try to bring out detail and there's where I lost definition. Im going to be working on lighting and such to try to get the luster and color the way I like, but so far the results have been quite pleasing.

I'll agree with "crisp." Ever seen steel when it comes out of the smelting furnace and cools? The slag looks the same... image

  • Frank,

The larger file size on the images is definitely an improvement!image

There is considerably less "noise" in this image than the images from the Mavica; this camera leaves no scanner archives even in a pic this large. Good job! I'm looking forward to seeing more images!
  • Those pics are a lot better, Frank. The quality is much higher and they are less pixalated then the pics you used to take. There was always something going on with your pics that I could not quite put my finger on but with the new camera you are going to have some great pics. That was a very wise move, IMHO. I think you will be much happier with the pics from this camera then with your old ones.image

    Nice pics and cam Frank!

Question - were you using the camera with it's original "stock" lens or did you have a different lens on it?
