Why are the 2003 mint sets selling for so much?

Are they super duper quality coins in these 2003 mint sets or extremely low mintage?

Comments

  • The mint suddenly stopped shipment on the sets last year, without warning. This probably left some dealers lower in stock than they would normally be, and left some collectors out in the cold.

Greg... Sounds like the mintage might be low and they were widely disbursted. That makes for a nice combo for the price to increase.
I guess that stopped production early to gear up for the double nickel mint sets.

  • Add to that the fact that the 2003 is the last year of the Jefferson Nickel.

come to think of it, yes, the coins in the `03 mint sets are better than years past.
    especially the P mint set.

without going off to look, what are these sets going for?

    Yup!

The Philly mint shut down was in Spring 2002.

That's right. They were minting the Ohio quarter at the time. End of April and
much of May if memory serves.

I believe that mintage will end up under one million sets again or close to it.
Most 2003 coins are a little tough to find nice apparently so there's likely a
little extra demand also from people looking for nice examples.

The coins in the mint sets certainly are nice. I'm convinced that the 2003-P cent is about MS68 - MS69. There's not a mark or spot on it! Maybe I'll do a guess the grade thread tomorrow.

Wasn't it the Tennesee quarter they were producing when then mint shut down?
