OT- Iraq has hit my family

About an hour ago I got off the phone with my sister in Florida, I have a brother and sister living there, and she was beside herself. It turns out my niece, after three years of leaving the Army, has gotten re-call orders and will be sent to Iraq. Her report date is 5 Sept. She is 22 yrs old, married and has a 2 1/2 year old daughter. I feel down and very sad. I am very close to my niece she'd spend a lot of time with us and my wife an I have been very invloved in her life...she is like a daughter us. But I feel even worse because I could not comfort my sister. She is a strong woman but this has ripped her apart. Hearing her cry ripped my heart out.

Please pray for my sister and my niece that both will have the strength to carry them through.

When I was at the airport preparing to leave on vacation, there were two groups of soldiers going through security when I did. One was a group of IRRs -- Individual Ready Reservists -- who'd been called up and were heading to Iraq and the other was a group of veterans on leave. Unfortunately, you can't have one without the other.

Still, to have left the service and start raising a family on the expectation that that part of your life is behind you is rather a rude awakening. It would seem to me that such recalls should be for stateside duty to free up regulars. I know it is a difficult blow and I will sure keep her and her family -- including you and your sister -- in my prayers.

I wish her safety and a speedy return. No exceptions are made for mothers with young children??? What a massive sacrifice to make.

  • That really stinks. Sorry to hear that. Young lady with a kid, that's not fair to either of them. I know I would have been ticked if my dad was told to go to Gulf "War" #1, three years after he retired.
I'll do my part to help in November.

It's tough to be called up to active duty after you've been off for awhile. It happened to me in 1990 when I got called up for the Gulf war and had to spend eight months in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Looking back, however, it was a good experience, even if it did disrupt my life and set my career back for awhile.

I hope your niece stays safe and her daughter is in good hands. image
