Ebay Advice

I won this auction on 6/29

ebay

Got the coin on 7/6 and the coin has obviously been plated gold and the gold is has started to wear off. The auction states that the coin has started to turn a little gold. I figued it was toning from the pic. In hindsight I guess I shoiuld have known. I emailed the guy on 7/6 that the coin was not toned, that it had been plated and I would like to return the coin for a refund. I did not hear back from him. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he may be on vacation and waited a week. I noticed early this week that he has posted some items up on ebay so now I know that he is not on vacation, he is just ignoring me. I emailed him again and still have not heard from him.

I got the coin for $6.39 including shipping so I am inclined to just chalk it up to a learning experience and forget about it. But I am a little irritated that the guy is ignoring me. I want to just give him neg feedback and forget about it but then he may neg me right back and ruin my feedback. Any advice????

  • Looks like maybe it was one of the old "racketeer nickels". I think it's kinda cool.

I don't know how much he knows about coins, so I don't know if this was a dishonest description or just not knowing coins all that well. Maybe it's an old racketeer nickel?

In any event, I don't think we can conclude that it was a scam, and it's certainly not worth risking a negative over $6.39. It's a learning experience. I don't think too many people that are willing to sell an item for a price that low are going to intentionally risk their reputation and their feedback rating over an amount that puny.
  • Well, he said he wasn't a coin dealer or collector, so he was either trying to bait, or was telling the truth. I'd keep it so you can use it as a comparison peace if you come across something that has a similiar listing.

You should have known better. Not worth the hassle of bothering with. Write it off as a learning experience.

Thanks for the advice....I am tempted to put it back up on ebay as a racketeer nickel but I will probably just keep it.

Cool novelty item if it's a rackateer nickel... image If it is, I believe well worth your $4 bid...

The seller may be using Ebay's Turbo Lister.

You schedule the start date and time for your listings.

Not worth the hassle with the seller. It is a racketeer nickel, and I bet if you list it as such on Ebay, with a little history of what it's all about, you'll get more than you paid for it.

BTW, I believe that most of those are not genuine racketeers. Probably plated at a much later point.
  • Looks rather nice. Better shape than my two V nickels. One has almost no reverse.

I would keep emailing him daily. And get his contact info from eBay and call him a few times a day.
And of course you should neg him.

You got well over $6 into this coin. Don't let the guy get away with a rip off of this massive scale.

Looks like a genuine racketeer nickle. As such, it's worth more than what you paid.
Either keep it or list it on Ebay as a possible racketeer nickle.
