Are things out of control?

Maybe it's just me, but this looks out of control. Yes, it is a beautiful toned Franklin. I put a bid on it too, but $1250+? I'm not sure it looks FBL to me but hard to see on the picture.

Do you agree?

Probably someone put a high reserve and after the auction the coin will be listed as not sold.

"Magnificently toned in a rich blend of emerald green, rose, golden sunset and blue-violet over a glimmer of mint luster. Like colors on both sides. Absolutely stunning eye appeal. Only a few highly unobtrusive, well concealed micro-ticks. Truly superb quality. One of the most beautifully toned Franklin half dollars ever!"

    certainly a beautiful coin!

I just saw a beautifully toned 58-D in 66 at the Baltimore show, on display by a forum member, and he paid $1,600 for it. One of the nicest toned for the dates I have ever seen. I would have paid it. I've spent $900 for a 66 58-D. Prices like this were more common several years ago for these coins, so no, don't think things are out of control.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

No. A great example of mint set toning--1958 was an especially vibrant year.

He took the pictures down but this was it.
    Guess I missed out.

I'm not that surprised. It's an exceptional coin.

Even on the Teletrade site, they show 2 previous auctions going for $250-ish. This is $1000 more!
  • PlacidPlacid Posts: 11,299 ✭✭✭
The other two are some ugly looking coins in the pictures though.

I know, but is this really $1000 worth of color? I can find a lot of other coins I would rather have from the 19th Century. I admit it is an incredible coin. I don't think Morgans are even bringing a $1000 premium for just color, are they?
  • It's a pretty coin, but if i had that kinda money to blow ,I'd blow it on smoething else.
  • nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
Some morgans bring more than $1000 for the color, if it's the right color in the right manner.

I'm just really surprised. Of course, its my fault. I started looking at this forum. I wasn't that big on toned coins until I see some of yours. So I start looking and came across this one. I figured it would be a nice addition to my collection as I don't have any Frankies.

I just got a cool Morgan off of ebay that I will post pictures of when I get it. The price on this auction is just blowing me away.

Yep, outstanding and special coins will always go way beyond the price guides.

And considering how we are all drooling over this coin, it doesn't carry the "Rainbow" designation. That ties into another thread going around.

Something is very wrong with Teletrade. Odd how many coins fetch massively huge premiums compared to comparable coins sold on Ebay and Heritage. I haven't seen any coins in my series that haven't sold for double what I have found them at other places.

We can all agree that beautiful toned coines are beautiful. It would appear that horrific multiples

being asked and paid for such coins, is reaching its peak. For average collectors, at this time, this may prove

a costly learning experience as the normal cycle of the coin bussiness again returns to what passes for normal.

The rush of Morgan dollars , DMPL, CCs and toned dollars have had many up and down cycles. There are a large

number of these coins relitive to the more classic coins and they tend to lend themselves to being manipulated by

indeviduals to creat a buying panic. They are great coins to collect, just be careful as prices become very rich and

inflated. Pop top coins in the modern series is very scary and requires expert guidence between the truly rare high grade

speiemins and top pops that are only temporarily scarce at the moment. We are now at a stage in the coin market when all should be

cautious and careful what we buy and what we pay. Caution may cost you some hypethetical profits, but it will never cost you

your hard earned assests. To those who may say how do I know these things, I would answer, I know because I have made the

same mistakes in prior cycles and have pain the price .

Just an update on this beautiful Franklin....

It didn't sell at $1250. That was the highest price I saw on it. Incredible prices for color., Yeah, things are out of control.
