Banner ads may suck...but it costs money to run these sites, and banner ads suck WAY less than pop-ups...

Because they didn't do it as a popup/popunder but as a table write.

BTW, if you want to get really fancy, you can write a simple proxy filter which takes their stylesheet reference (or even table code) and dynamically re-write it to eliminate the cells. Problem solved!
