What is a choice P/L Morgan?

I have something terrible to admit. I have no idea what I am doing.

MY first post and I am showing all of my knowledge from 4 months in the hobby.

Anyway, I went into my local shop and found a 1880 s Morgan that was graded Choice Prooflike. At the time I purchased the coin I had no idea what the grade meant. I still dont. I really liked how clean it looked though, so I did it.

How does choice prooflike translate on the 70 point scale.

    I believe choice should be a MS63 to64.

    Welcome to the boards smiles72. As to your question "choice" should be MS64 on the 70 point scale. The "PL" relates to the amount of reflection can be seen in the fields of the coin.

    Louis is correct, but with some dealers, "choice" = "slider" - an AU coin.

    The terms "choice prooflike" really don't translate into the 70 point scale. Originally, back in the day, "choice" was a term added to "uncirculated", which usually referred to a coin that was in the middle of the uncirculated scale. At that time, 60 was an uncirculated, 63 was choice, and 65 was gem. So, it should roughly translate into a 63, but people throw "choice" and "gem" and "PQ" around with such carelessness, that it really depends on who's saying it. As far as "prooflike", that is a designation that does not affect the numerical grade. A coin could be MS60 PL, or MS70 PL, or anywhere in between. A prooflike designation will not affect the numerical grade, but it usually brings a premium, due to the added attractiveness.....

    How does your coin compare to this one? This is a PCGS MS62PL. If your coin looks similar to this, maybe a bit better, then you did fine.

    My coin is quite a bit cleaner as far as bag marks. I hope it is a 63 I paid a premium for since it is PL. Or it is a 64 I got a great deal on.

    If it is considerably cleaner than the coin I posted, then I would say your dealer graded well.
