Coins with kids trivia question

The Littleton Sacagewa folder says "[The Sacagewa] is the first U.S. coin struck for circulation to feature a child." So the trivia question is, what was the first U.S. coin (not necessarily struck for circulation) to feature a child?

  • I wasn't sure about the Pan-Pacific half -- I couldn't tell if that was supposed to be a child or some sort of small mythical figure like a sprite. In any case, in my 5 minutes of research, I was only able to find one other coin that depicted a child. Anyone know what it is (or know of any others)?

Here's a longshot, since I don't own this coin, nor have I seen more than a couple at shows: The Oregon Trail Commemorative. I thought I saw the image of a child in the wagon.
  • anybody know where the gravesite of Sacagewea is ?

    Hint: I DO

I always thought it was the Roanoke Half dollar but you might have something with the Oregon Trail. I can't tell from the pictures I have if the person in the wagon is holding a child or not, but I think it is. I don't think the small figure on the Pan-Pacific half is supposed to "be" a child but something more like a cherub.

The advantage of the Roanoke is that the child pictured represents a real person, Virginia Dare the first European born in the New World.

Looks like some non-descript child in the wagon. Looks like he/she's waving at the cows.

  • Hmm -- hadn't even considered the Oregon Trail commerative -- that child is pretty hidden. The one I was thinking of was the 1986 Statue of Liberty half dollar -- on the reverse there's a child.

I also think it's the IHC

  • The IHC may have used a child as a model, but was it meant to actually portray a child?

1892 Columbian Half.....I think you can see a kid on the deck of the ship.
    Collecting since 1976.
  • I just checked mine and I didn't see anyone on the deck of the ship ... unless they changed something between 1892 and 1893...
