To clean or not to clean

Now before we let out a collective groan of "here we go again"...............let me say that I've been here a while and have read the posts about how you shouldn't clean your coins, and I understand as far as coins that have value. That doesn't apply here. I was lucky enough to find a silver 3 cent piece in some junk coin I had to sort through at work today. The reverse is fairly clean and slighty worn but you can make out all of the details. The obverse is another story. It's more worn (enough that "states" is about the only thing that you can read) and has some dark blotches of something on it. I realize that cleaning it isn't going to change the fact that I can't read the date, but it might help with being able to see what details you can see. Since this coin obviously has no monetary value, what can it hurt?
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions(on how to clean)? Thanks
