What US Coins have the best image of the Eagle?

SemperFISemperFI Posts: 802 ✭✭✭
Of all US coins, which do you think has the best image of the Eagle and explain why.

If you have the image available, post the image of the coin so we can see the Eagle you are referring to.

Here are mine:

I think this eagle from the 1984-S Olympic Dollar looks extremely brave and holds it ground wherever goes. It has that don't mess with me look to it. An eagle to look up to.

This Eagle from the 1917 Type 1 Quarter I think seems very peaceful, majestic and confident as it glides thru the air with its head up high.

Agree with the 84 olympic dollar. Mine has such a beautiful cameo on it. It is the most breathtaking reverse I own. I can't believe more people don't snag them up, since they all look so good.

I forget which one but there is a pattern with a stunning eagle on it. Unlike any other. I'll see if I can find it.

    Great question!

The SLQ, Sac and Walking Liberty are all great Eagles.

One of favorite Eagles is the POW medal Eagle. It shows the Eagle in a forest of bamboo. I think it portrays the story(?) of the POWs well.

Can someone snag a picture and put it up here? TIA

  • Hands down the eagle on the Barber half and the Barber quarter. This eagle is spread wide coming in for the kill. It's bold, stretches across the entire coin and has a mean look to it.

Gobrecht dollar, SLQ, WLH, Sac dollar eagles.
  • I'll go along with the $20 gold St. Gaudens also. Next choice is the 1986 Statue of Liberty gold $5 commemmorative. Next is 50 cent walker.

#1 Is Walker half Eagle (in a virtual tie with #2)
#2 Is Saint Gaudens $20 Eagle high relief
    #3 Is Flying Eagle cent
#4 Is Sain Gaudens $20 Eagle low relief
#5 Is Standing Liberty quarter Eagle.

Here is a picture of one of my 1856 FE cent eagles. I refuse to buy them in mint state. The splotches are not on the coin. When I edited the size of the picture, I did something to screw up the picture.

But since it's my favourite US coin of all time i'm just gonna have to say it...

The $20 Liberty, I just like that hereldic eagle.

SemperFI: I have already added my 50 cents (Walker) and $20 (Saint) contributions earlier in this thread, but I've noticed that many of us have interpreted your question in different ways.

In interpreted your question << What US Coins have the best image of the Eagle? >> to mean the most real likeness of the eagle, but one can also interpret it to mean the most attractive image of the eagle.

I agree that the Heraldic Eagle is a very attractive and highly symbolic image containing the arrows for strength, the olive branch for peace, the stars and bars for states, etc.

You have posed a very interesting question which has stimulated a lot of us to evaluate both the artistry and the symbolism of our U.S. Coins. That's a very appropriate theme for this Independence Day weekend!! Thanks!!
