Well as I expected I was flamed. the kid's were depicted as greedy, selfish, whining brats. JohnZ a tragic hero. Every benefit of the doubt given to him, none to the kids. As a matter of fact, in one post it was insinuated that they were running some sort of scam to triple their winnings. What a crock of ____! The offers of substitution of prizes were the kind, spontaneous and generous offerings by board members who sympathized with these kids. No one twisted any arms.
But who cares about the actual facts of what has been going on, it's all about impressions. Isn't it. Well, I'm really impressed.
I simply wanted to know what was going on? Since I hadn't heard from John since 5/17/04 I thought someone else may have. I thought people would want to know what was going on. I guess I was wrong. I apologize for soiling the purity of the boards by doing such an undignified thing as asking a simple question on behalf of a little boy who has been asking me the same questions for nearly 8 weeks.

Put your kid on the phone and have him say, "sir where are the coins you promised to send out???"
As for ER's post...

well no, no one insinuated a scam, however, from the number of pm's I received on the subject when I started a fund to replace the prizes, with the gracious help of JadeRareCoin, some participants seemed to want to capitalize on a different board members offer at the same time.

facts are, other aspects of life got in teh way of John Z following through. His life issues was bigger than the contest.

To my knowledge only the first prize winner has received his prize. If anyone, that's anyone has other information please correct me if I'm wrong.
Let it ride! Simply consider the sources. If it'd make you feel any better; if it were my munchkin, I too, would be pissed off, curious & upset watchin' my kid walk around in bewilderment wondering where the hell his coin is. Kids don't understand the term patience.

I pay every bill I can with online billpay and in over two years, have never had a problem.
Everyone,
Can we restart the fund to buy coins for the finalist, so we can make this issue go away? We almost had it solved when JohnZ turned up and repromised to send the coins. Let's complete it this time and move on.

Robert, I am sure that the same contributors would donate again, but that may not be necessary. There are 2 board members who may step in and fund/handle any short falls, assuming that there are any shortfalls. It may be easier to do it this way rather than solicit donations again. That got real messy last time. I suggest that we wait a few more days to see what happens. Some of the winners did receive their prizes, I think, so perhaps the other prizes are......well....in the mail. Either way, this will all be taken care of soon.

<< <i>Razorface and others: the issue isn't about patience. The issue is that John Z made statements that were patently false. He said more than a month ago that the coins were in the mail, when time has proven that to be totally untrue. However, it was learned that John had some family issues that prevented him from communicating or sending the prizes at a later date, as he must have originally planned. However, it seems that things are starting over again. It appears he started to send out the prizes, as I have received mine. He must have gotten no further, since no one else has gotten theirs. Again, he left messages saying the coins would be out in a few days, however that few days has once again turned into weeks. This is not about patience. I think Coinhusker and his son have been more than patient. It seems that some of the board members eager to "flame" Coinhusker, and jump to JohnZ's defense have forgotten that this ten year old did a lot of hard work, has waited a long time, and still has yet to enjoy the fruits of his labor. If it had been a business transaction, and Coinhusker had paid money, without receiving a coin, I think the reaction would be a lot different. In a way this WAS a business transaction. An essay and one's labor for a coin. Some of you seem to think that John Z's act of simply offering the contest was generous enough, and he should be given a pass, that Coinhusker and his son should get on with their lives, or that Coinhusker should buy his son the coin. Though I have not done business with him, it is my understanding that John Z is a standup, reliable fellow. That reputation, at this point, is in great danger. Coinhusker and son: stay strong and stick with it!
Best,

I am sure John Z appreciates that expression of gratitude for having sent YOUR prize.
I read this stuff that makes it sound like people are entitled to something. John Z out of the goodness of his heart put together a contest that he didn't have to, in order to encourage YN's, and it appears, due to personal tragedy couldn't follow through as planned. Yet the intended recipients of his good will are wanting to burn his house down. His mother died? Too f'ing bad - where's my coins!
How about you folks all get together and sue him?
As Dennis said above, there are a few folks willing to buy these prizes, I among them. And as RYK said, it's worth the monney just to not have to hear about it anymore.
Anouncement coming soon......please stay tuned.
To keep things simple, we will not accept donations this time around, but THANKS to everyone who has offered to do so. There are some good people on this forum.

I've had it with this pompous, self-righteous, judgemental attitude. The strife and ill will that this has caused isn't worth it!
I'll never bring up the subject on these boards again!
CoinHusker, I can understand your frustration. This will all be taken care of very soon (matter of days). You've gone this far, so please just bare with us. I will send you a PM regarding a mailing address.
Thanks, Dennis

Never look a gift horse in the mouth. A coin in the hand is worth two in the bush.
I've had it with this pompous, self-righteous, judgemental attitude.
Not the attitude I was trying to convey, but I was willing to pay for a coin for your kid then as I am now. Frankly, I should be buying my own kid the coin, as perhaps you should. And frankly, I am more interested in reading about coins and coin auctions and coin books (etc.) than the back and forth of this stale topic.
I'll never bring up the subject on these boards again!
Yes, you keep saying that...and bringing it up again. Gotcha!

A hypothetical. Suppose you sent a $5000 cashier's check for an 1893-S to someone, and after a month and a half of nothing in the mail, you received a message that said, "Sorry, I've had a death in family," and then nothing else. As terrible as a death in the family is, according to your logic, you would just let him keep the check, and send the coin if and when he felt like it. Come on!
As Dennis said above, there are a few folks willing to buy these prizes, I among them. And as RYK said, it's worth the monney just to not have to hear about it anymore.
I would like to congratulate Dennis and the others for their generosity. That said, I think everyone should care about this, because this situation is hurting all of us. << <i>(I received a message on May 17th) stating, "You should receive it [the coin] in a few days." This statement was false, as he had not even put the coins in mail >>

Russ, NCNE
<< <i>Uh...they ARE entitled to something. Their prize, as promised, for services rendered. >>
I know they entered a contest - I didn't realize they had been hired to provide services.
your arguements are flimsy at best. John sent you your prize, now he's a liar who didn't send it fast enough.
that's a whole bunch of nerve you're toting around there.
We must use discernment when we enter a freebie contest. Kind of like purchasing a coin... Unbelievable...
I have hade many and given many coins and never left the kids hanging or the winner, ever.
And guess what? I have many problems and issues also..... In fact during one contest, I was hospitolized due to illness, but I still
made arrangements so a few kiddy-o's got what I promised.
I think this whole thing is a terrible act by JohnZ, it fits his very strange behavior, the behavior he used when he called my Mexican people slaves that him and his friend can buy and sell, then of course a flame war broke out, he then said he wouldn't ever come back which he did, to have this contest, and I wondered if he was trying to save face, by having this contest....
I for one know first hand not to believe a thing that comes out of his mouth.
I'm in to help with the prizes for the kiddy-o's....

<< <i> but keep in mind he is a kid and shouldn't be expected to have the judgment of an adult. >>
Are you kidding? He has shown twice the judgement, class, character than most of the "adults"(?) who have posted to my thread. So, I'm curious, what kind of judgement are the adults repsonsible for around here? Looks like a few could use a crash course.
It seems to me that many adults on these boards feel like they can trash a YN, question his character with impunity. But, God forbid, if a YN should ever dare state an opinion or question an adult about anything.
"He's just a kid, he doesn't know better." What excuse do the "adults" have then?
I am sorry about that. I guess I inadvertently hurt his feelings and then piled it on when he called me "pompous, etc."
The reality is, I come here to chat about coins, coin auctions, coin shows, coin catalogs, coin history, coin grading, coin sets, coin websites, and I even throw in a giveaway or contest now and then and target the prizes to the YNs.
JohnZ, who is hallowed by some here and dissed by others, has a contest for YNs, requiring them to write a paper and then, for lack of a better word, stiffs them on the prize. Maybe he was ill, his mother died, his house burned down, his post office stole the coins, he never intended to send the coins--I have no idea what happenned--it does not even matter at this point. The coins were not sent and the YNs got stiffed.
The board members stepped up and through the additional generosity of Jade/Dennis were willing to make up the shortfall. JohnZ resurfaces, promises the coins are going out ASAP (where did we hear that before?), and all is well...until at least one YN does not get his coins. I am sympathetic and empathetic. I have kids. I do not like them to be disappointed. However, at this point the adults have to step in and either break it to the kid that he got shafted or concoct some scheme to get him a replacement coin, either of which is acceptable to me. I am/was even willing to help pay for it, for goodness sake. What is unacceptable is the constant harping on the issue. I have written off any chance of CH's son getting the coin long ago, as CH should have. It ain't coming! If it does, great! I will be thrilled to be wrong.
To hold the boards here hostage by continuing to harp on the issue was what got me, and perhaps I lost my patience. Sorry.
BR
I think his problems started alot sooner then this contest....
This despicble thread he posted about Mexicans was a complete and utter surprise to me....
but his behavior seemed to get very strange on the open forum....
I do hope that he gets help or finds a way to deal with his struggles, whatever they may be....
I do wish him the best..... and I'm not trying to kick a person when they are down...... Hell, many of us would have tried to help him if he were to ask...
But i'm sorry, I think a person finds a way to get this packages sent.... short of death, you find a way...... someway, somehow, you get the coins packaged and eventually you get them to the PO or you have somebody help.... With as much time that has passed, surely this could have happened by now.

GOOD NEWS:
We have a solution to this problem. Those who have not received coins will get one mailed to them within a few days. Once the coins are purchased, we will mail them via Priority Mail to make up for lost time.
To keep it simple, we will NOT ask for forum member donations this time. That got messy a few weeks ago. Boiler78 (aka Mark) made a very gracious and generous offer to buy ALL of the missing gold coins out of his pocket. He made this offer behind the scenes and seemed to go out of his way not to announce his generosity. That's a solid sign of a good hearted person. Cheers to Boiler78. Also, SarasotaFrank stepped in again (behind the scenes) and offerd to chip in. Frank is putting in a generous $150 gift, jaderarecoin is kicking in $100 and all postage/insurance expense, and Boiler78 will pay the balance of the bill.
Here's the kicker: CoinHusker just pm'ed me and politely stated that he did not want the prize for his son under any circumstance, due to some of the comments made about him and his son by other board members. I am trying to get him to change his mind, but he has some very valid points related to his values and principles.
IMPORTANT:
The coins will go to those who have NOT received their prize and WANT a replacement prize. Therefore, if you were a contest winner (2nd, 3rd or consolation prizes), please send me a PM with your address. The prizes are going to be Ch. AU PCGS or NGC certified gold coins (Liberty half eagles for second, and Liberty quarter eagle for third place). The consolation winners will receive 1/10 ounce American Gold Eagles. There's a chance that you will eventually receive the prize from John, but that would perhaps turn this otherwise bitter event into a pleasant experience. I hope that this sounds fair. If not, please offer suggestions.
In addition to noting SarasotaFrank's and Boiler78's generosity, I want to mention that several other members offered their financial support to rectify this issue. I hate to name names, because I will probably forget someone, but here goes:
razorface1027, RYK, Oldnewbie, LucyBop, fountainheadgold, ursabear, TayTay, UncleJoe, Wondo, Fairlaneman, Numismanic, marcmoish, Garneteye, mgoodm3, relayer and dwssws. Did I forget someone? If so, please pm me at remind me. Thanks to everyone for your generosity, even if you could not donate, your good thoughts are noted.
The sad thing is that this otherwise positive event has caused problems between forum members. I think that we even lost a few members because of this mess. I am sure that JohnZ had only good intentions when he started his contest. Because of some unfortunate family events, he was delayed in mailing the prizes, which is understandable. Others offered to buy the coins for the YNs, then JohnZ returned and the fighting began.
I hope we can all put this behind us and get back to talking about coins. I also hope that everyone can "shake hands and make up".

SarasotaFrank, if that is how you really feel, I can say without hesitation we don't want the coins, the prize or your "generosity". I wouldn't want my son to feel obliged to any one that could write some of the things you have about him (becasue he's one of the "intended recipients" you mentioned) that you have over the past couple of days.
So, We are done with this whole thing! It's over. I've contacted JadeRareCoin not to include my son in the prizes they are gathering. As I've said before, as far as my son and I are concerned, this issue is settled. If you still want to "help" the other winners (or is that "whiners" they've been used synonymously so often over that past 2 months I thought I better use both so everyone is on the same page as to who I'm referring to) go ahead. I'm sure they would appreciate it. Just leave my son out of it.
My son and I will go on with our lives as so many on the boards have told us to do in kind and not so kind ways over the past 2 months.
PS, FYI, he's only 10, he doesn't use the "f" word like some adults do that have good judgement.
Why don't you let him know rather how so many came to his aid when it seems whatever happenned that held JohnZ from shipping for whatever reasons etc etc. You get the picture.
Marc
<< <i>dunno about that........ you're sounding really like umm a cry baby now and overly sensitive? come on some of the good folks actually went out of there way to rectify this miserable fiasco especially jade with his offer and Boiler and others...... The least you can do is to puiblicly appreciate the efforts of the many that understood your predicament. I don't blame you for feeling the way you did, granted, and you are correct period! What transpired was not fair. But you must first learn to handle the few that put you off or phrase something not exactly to your liking. Just like you need to learn to handle certain situations differently. After all you do have a 10 year old who will need to look up to his dad....you surely don't want him to see how you handle these guys.
Why don't you let him know rather how so many came to his aid when it seems whatever happenned that held JohnZ from shipping for whatever reasons etc etc. You get the picture.

Thanks for telling me what I need to learn and what kind of example i need to give to my son. WOW! When you fly do you tell the pilots where to land? Do you think you could sound any more patronizing? Geeez.
edit to add: Don't get mad, I just took your sig advice.
Sometimes it is best to stand your ground. JMHO here but I think this is not one of those times. I would love to see you and your son accept a very nice offer. I'm not standing up for anyone other than your boy. I have two little ones and understand his disappointment.
He did a fine job with his essay, and folks want him to get the coin.

When my grandpa died, it wasn't but about 2 months until my grandmother died....so, as the family was just starting to get back to "normal", we had to go through another one. Then, about 3 months later, my sister (28 at the time) died of heart conditions. I was the closest family member (I am 6 years older) and was there having to make the decision on pulling the plug or not (she had had no brain activity for a full day) when she went out, peacefully I hope, before I had to actually make the decision.
If I had had a contest at that time, it would have been the farthest thing from my mind. For at least a total of 6 months while I went through all of the above (Feb-Aug). No one got hurt from the contest. No one was "entitled" to having a prize (they were offered/promised and should be delivered, but if they aren't, oh well).
I feel for the young people, but, as someone else pointed out, take this opportunity to teach them about compassion and life. You don't always get what you think you will and at times, life will kick you square in the groin and not let you back up for a bit.....so, move on with what you can.
Everyone has an opinion on this.....and, I think everyone is right....to a degree.....in MY opinion, CH, you need to chill and stop worrying in public on the forum. Let it go....if you have contact (PMs) with the other winners, and JohnZ (granted, no contact but you have his PM and can probably tell when he was last online here), then use that.
Why go public unless you are trying to force JohnZ in some way.....and are assuming he isn't honest. I think he is. I think he is going through hard times with family like he posted. Even if he isn't, it isn't my business, or anyone else's on the forum. He is an adult, he did NOT take anyone's money and run. He did not have coins shipped to him and not pay or return them. At the worst, he ends up breaking a promise or commitment. Guess what? That happens in life too.
Teach your son that.
For the YNs reading this......there is good and bad in everything. Don't always believe that everything will go great, but don't always believe there is bad in people. Just realize that sometimes, life gets in the way or good people have problems. That is how I am bringing up my son.
Also, and I really feel this.....no one is "entitled" to hardly anything in life. If you work an honest day's work, you are entitled to the pay agreed upon (minus taxes, etc), but, if you just show up, you are not entitled to being paid (unless a government employee ). So, there are times you get things you think you deserve and times you don't get them. During the times you don't, don't sweat the small stuff....life is too short and there are too many other things to worry about.
(sorry...off soapbox now......just tired of seeing all the complaining back and forth and when people should take things to a PM instead of constantly trying to air dirty laundry to try to garner sympathy/support)
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
