Do you have coin friends in your local area?

mrpaseomrpaseo Posts: 4,753 ✭✭✭
I was just talking with a fellow forum friend and realized...I don't know ANYONE local that collects coins...wouldn't know what to do if I did image

Am I the only one in this boat or are there others that find all their coin talk on the internet and not in real life?

    Good question...

About 2 years ago, I was chatting online with someone in Seattle (I live in Minnesota) about coins. I had just recently bought a coin from him. And he asked if I knew so and so. He noticed that the zip code for my order, and this other person's order, were the same. So he hooked us up online via Seattle, and we found out this other person and I just live 1.2 miles apart. Wierd.

SS350Camaro is the closest that I'm aware of, probably 80 or 90 miles.

  • An old lady down the road asked me how much a half dime was worth. Another lady excitedly told me her husband was saving pre statehood quarters because he thought they would be worth something one day. That is the extent of my local coin conversations. So, you all are it. Jerry

I don't either. I do have lots of football buddies and even befriended a Redskins fan a few months ago so my new Redskins room I just built complete with a 52" big screen HDTV will be rockin' this fall!

I live 10 minutes from NoObIeE... DaveG is pretty local, too, though I'm not sure where he lives, exactly. Also, I see Bustman at the local shows, along with TomB (NGC boards--formerly over here, where he told me about the show). Also, Wihlborg (NGC boards) isn't too far away. And let's not forget MrEureka image

So yeah, there are locals around image

I know that a few guys live in the area but I've never met themimage I was thinking of putting together a lunch for those who live in the Phx area, as a meet and greet.

A day after finding this site I found one local guy who collects Morgans. We've met, I made a purchase, and I plan on buying more.
    Prost!

  • I guess they only grade coins here in Newport Beach, CA. I've tried to link up with a couple members in the So Cal area, but they don't respond to my PMs...

I did visit London Coin Gallaries here about a year ago when I got back into collecting. They were nice enough to offer me $5 for a 1896-O that ended up gradeing AU-58... Their offer on the 1893-S was $15... image

Yet the mint claims that over 100 million people collect coins (one out of every three people). image
No one local here that I know of but there are two coin clubs within 70 miles of me so I get to visit with some twice a month.

Do you have coin friends in your local area?

There are 3 fellow coin collectors in my area. One is my local coin dealer. Another used to post here but is now MIA. The other, I barely keep in contact.

There are 2 guys local to me, about the same age, that I first "met" on RCC. Subsequent to that, we got together at a monthly local show and often do lunch after the show and do a show and tell.

Meos1 and I met in college over 12 years ago. I have another friend that collects on a part time basis. That's about it.

Weird, although, thinking about it, I'm not sure what to do had I had the opportunity to have a local friend, there are no shows in the area, and no shops in this town...

I guess coin collecting is a lonely pass time. Good thing my wife enjoys it too image
