Step 3 in my quest to assemble a 1911 Proof Set -- Toned Proof Barber Quarter Pics

I already posted pics of the Lincoln Cent, I bought the Liberty Nickel last year @ a Heritage Auction in NYC.

And now I picked this up through Pinnacle as one of Mark's last transactions before he starts flying solo.

A mere mintage of 543 makes this one (I think) the third lowest of the proof mintages. The coin is just stunning with much more cameo contrast shown in the pics. Both I and Mark think this is a Cam designation no brainer -- why PCGS missed it is beyond me. It might even go PR66CAM.

Now if he can find me a nicely toned dime and half this will really be a remarkable set.

Thanks

Michael

Love that coin, simply spectacular. I have a PCGS PR-68 1951 Jeff (13/0) that is at least CAM, with a shot at DCAM. However, the rainbow toning obscures the CAM on the obverse. I asked David Hall about CAM/DCAM designation on toned coins and he said heavy toning generally disqualifies a coin from the designation since it tends to lack the needed contrast.

The toning is more subtle with the coin in hand and you can see the contrast from across the room. I'm not really worried about the designation, but I'm sure it would go CAM if I ever crossed it or sent it in on a designation review.

Finding the matching dime and half is going to be tough though. I really want a uniform look to the set.

    Thanks

  • Wow...that is one beautiful coin CONGRATS.!
  • I think PCGS not giving coins like that cameo status really encourages people to dip them. Dip out that beautiful toning and it might go cameo. With cameo on the label people will pay more money. However the coin is not as nice, in my opinion. So I think PCGS should change their policy.

Cool Mike, are you going to have them put in one of those multi-coin PCGS proof-set holders? An older set like that would be great in one of thoseimage----------BigE

On this particular (toned) example the cameo contrast is quite evident. As Michael noted, it is even more obvious than it shows in the images. PCGS will award the designation to coins with this degree of toning.
  • Beautiful coin. Barbers proofs really are gorgeous coins.

quite beautiful, I really like it.
  • That is really nice! I don't think I'd be too worried about not having a CAM on the holder, a coin like that speaks for itself.

    Thanks everyone for the compliments.

I thought about doing the Barbers in blast white CAMs, but I'd rather have toned original coins than dipped out blast white with deep watery mirrors.

I think once this set is complete it will probably go into a multiholder. I like the look of having all the coins together in one giant slab.

Now I just have to try to find the matching pieces to the puzzle.

Dark & ugly just like Barbers are sposed to be. A cool Quarter!
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • That looks like a very cool quarter with or without the designation.

    That's a beauty.
  • Very nice coin!
  • Superb coin!

If you have them handy, can you repost the cent and nickel photos as well?

Good luck on your continued hunt!

Unfortunately, my computer with the image editing software & photos is down. I have to get it fixed and will post the others later along with a 1922-D NGC MS65* toned Peace $ I just got off Ebay.
