Two more for the 1901 Victorian set!

British Honduras, 50 cents, KM10. Only 10,000 struck. Catalogs $40 in VF and $120 in EF. Looks VF or VF+ to me. The seller noted some small hairlines, but judging from what I see in the picture, I can live with 'em. The only other British Honduras coin from 1901 is the 25-cent piece. They used to catalog these under Belize. This filled a tough hole in the set. I sniped it for sixty bucks 'cause I doubt I'll see another one offered for a while.

Cyprus, 18 piastres, KM7. Only 200,000 struck. Catalogs $40 in F and $150 in VF, and these are pricey in higher grades. I saw a high-end, choice AU or UNC example at the last FUN show, at the Spink table, and would probably have bought it, despite the hefty pricetag. The person at the table was very pleasant and willing to work with me a little on the price, but I noticed the coin had an ever-so-slight bend in it, and couldn't justify spending real money for a bent coin, even though the bend was nearly imperceptible. Most of these I have seen seem to be well-worn, and this one I just got is no exception, but I got it for $7.50 plus $3.00 shipping, so I'm happy (it'll serve until upgrade time). I'm also happy to finally add a coin from Cyprus to the 1901 set- I got the "big one" first! Bought it from somebody in Cyprus.

I have rekindled my interest in the 1901 set lately, perhaps just to have a true collecting outlet, since most of the buying I do these days is as a dealer, for resale. These, however, I am collecting for my daughter, so they'll stay around long enough that I'm not so price-conscious. I need to make up a list of haves and have nots for this set. I still have not completely mapped out what I'll need, though I have made good progress in the British coins, now I have these two, and I bought a sweet little piece from Ceylon and an ICG MS64 RB 1901 Canadian cent. I know I still need the Maundy set and the Brit and Aussie sovereigns. In the half-sovereigns I have the British one, and I'm skipping the Australian 1901 half-sovereigns, since they were proof-only and are so rare as to be uncollectible. Basically I need anything from 1901 with Victoria's portrait on it, in the nicest grade I can find.

Good finds! I know from experience that British Honduras and Cyprus silver from George V and before are hard to find in other-than-trashed condition.

One thing that'll make the set interesting by my branching out into the Empire, rather than just homeland types, is the amazing variety of portraits they used. I'm not stuck with the old widow's head- even in 1901, a lot of colonies were using young heads and intermediate heads. Her Majesty was a woman of many faces.

Very nice additions, I like the idea of different portraits and conditions in that set.

Regarding the silver 1901 coins from Cyprus they are very rare and yes, me too, I have yet to see an uncirculated one, *sigh*, although I'm aware of a proof image example of the 18 piastres in NGC's census report. *double sigh* One year types, and I think that this portrait has not been used in any other country. They first circulated 40 days after her death. A nice unc bronze 1/4 piastre would be your best bet for a neat coin from Cyprus.

I'd like to see all the coins you've assembled so far for this set. image

edited : I've paid multiples of what you have, for a raw EF 18 piastres with very pretty colours (graded EF45 by ANACS' tough standards as usual). Yours was a real steal and much nicer than most. image

    Yeah... so would I! image

I looked for them the other night, and they weren't in their spot on the shelf above my desk. I'm thinkin' maybe I took 'em down and put 'em in the safe, last time we went on vacation.

It's always a delight to snare a difficult one -- but two in such a short time is a special pleasure indeed!! image
