Anacs morgans

ddbirdddbird Posts: 3,168 ✭✭✭
I was just wondering if anyone else noticed that most anacs morgans are undergraded. Out of the 10 I own, about 8 are undergraded. Are they just super careful with morgans, or am I that good at cherrypickin'? image

The ones I've crossed cross lower or at the same level.

The only anacs graded morgan I had bodybagged at pcgs in the slab and raw then upgraded at anacs.
    I have bad luck.

relative to the other 2 graders. Most of my 63 anacs morgans are nicer than some of my 65 pcgs! Its odd!
  • ANACS is very conservative on most of their grading in my opinion from experiences with them.

I had an 1890 Morgan that was an easy 64 shot at 65 and it came back a 63. Coinbuf is the proud owner of that coin now, and I hope he cracks it out and sends it to PCGS.

I must say that it is a very nice coin and I think it's a lock 64 shot 65 also.image

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends on the coin in my experience. ANACS has tightened again in 2004 though. PCGS seems to be treating them with more respect now.

I agree, I wouldn't say most, that may be too extreme, but I do find quite a few great buys on undergraded ANACS material. For me I see it as a plus, and just adds to the fun of finding themimage
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

Well as of now...for morgans, anacs is quickly gaining my respect. I think they grade conservativly, and at the moment the prices are cheaper!
  • All my Morgan Dollars have been graded and attributed by ANACS. I like their style and
I like their service. Works for me.

I bought an 1881-S Morgan graded MS-66 by ANACS about 2 months ago. It crossed into a PCGS MS-66 slab. It all depends on the coin. I'm sure some will cross higher, some lower, some the same and some (if you have my usual luck) will body bag. This is were it pays to really learn about the coin so you can make a fair guess about your chances of crossing.
  • The Morgans I got from Anacs too seem to be undergraded, got some that are MS-61, MS-62, MS-63, nothing higher. They look almost the same, some better than my NGC graded MS-64s.

I've only had two ANACS Morgans, one was an ANCS 64, now a PCGS 65, and the other is a 64PL and it is a borderline DMPL and IMO, a borderline 63.

If you can find ANACS crackouts, good for you...but, good luck.

You can get far better deals buying Anacs, my personal opinion.

I've handled quite a few ANACS Morgans, and the majority were not undergraded. It really depends on the era, but I find their grading to be, on average, a bit looser than PCGS and about the same as NGC.

Now, 1950 to 1970 proof coins are a different matter and especially SMS coins. They are very conservative with these, in some cases more conservative than PCGS. Great cherrypicking to be had when they can be found.

There has been a major shift away from ANACS in the past several years, which I attribute primarily to the registry systems created by PCGS and NGC. This has created some wonderful buying opportunies for some of the ANACS coins.

Not all services are good with all coins, but ANACS, IMHO, is good with Morgans.

David all recently said with respect to TPG that NGC and ANACS are both good. I agree. As with any grader, not ALL coins are going to be super, but ANACS has holdered a lot of very nice Morgans.

    I brake for ear bars.

Does anybody know the official anacs definitions for PL and DMPL designations?? Or if they've changed recently? I saw a couple of anacs DMPL morgans this past weekend, and they looked overdesignated to me- barely PL. Does anybody have any insight into this??

I've been told, that ANACS calls PL at 2 inches (I think... *shrug*) DMPL at 4" and UltraDMPL at 12", but at PCGS, DMPL is 8"

  • I have to respectfully disagree with the ANACS undergrade statement. I have crossed a few and either get a straight crossover or a one point drop going from ANACS to PCGS. I am happy to hear you may have had different results.

LOLOLOLOL, seriously, you ARE joking, aren't you?? As far as ANACS grading on Morgan dollars, they have extremely liberal standards on assigning DMPL, and I would say that 85% of the ANACS graded Morgans I see appear very weak for the stated grade or just plain overgraded compared to their PCGS or NGC counterparts. While I DO occasionally see an ANACS graded Morgan that looks ok / nice for the grade, they are the exception and not the rule.

There is a reason why ANACS graded coins in general trade at a significant discount to PCGS / NGC coins, and why they are so infrequently traded at all at major shows and auctions............and it isn't because they're undergraded I can assure you.

dragon: True until the past year. They have tightened a LOT.

BAh you just need to look harder....nicer anacs are out there!

I would have to agree with Dragon. ANACS might make sense for grading common dates or circulated coins but even if they have tightened up they will have a hard time attracting better date, high value coins into their holders. The price disparity between coins in their holders and NCG and PCGS coins is just too great.

Edited to Add: If you think the dollars you are seeing in ANACS holders are tightly graded, it might be worth playing the crack out game. Let us know how you fare.

Give it 3 years..anacs will catch up as far as morgans. Im not saying they are a better gradin company becuase i have seen some of their other coins...but i think they will surpass pcgs and ngc with morgans eventually!

Who is going to feed them the volume of quality conis they would need to achieve parity? The services don't build a reputation based on MS64 83-o's. Dealers who want to get the best price for the quality material will not send it to ANACS. Consider Larry Shapior's recent thread about the market resistance he has encountered offering dollars in NGC holders.
