my best coin investment

My best coin investment.

My best investment was the 1999 silver proof set. I think I paid about $25 in 1999. I bought the proof set because I felt I was buying history not an investment. A dealer offer me $200 for each set.

My best would be the 1928-D Lincoln I bought for $26 at a coin board in Tucson AZ. Sent it off to ANACS and came back as an MS63 RB RPM #1. I sold it for $700. I bought another coin out of a dealers showcase and paid $1. Sent to ANACS and came back as an 1970-S Proof 65 CAM Small Date. Sold it for $79. So don't think the dealers catch everything! Granted they usually catch 99.99 %!!!!! 1939-Jefferson 5 cent $3 at coin show it sold as an MS64 5.5 steps DDR Die#2 for $200. 1939 Jefferson 5 cent $3 off Ebay sold as an AU55 DDR Die#1 for $81. Bought 1857 Flying Eagle VF for $18 off Ebay. Sold as an ANACS VF DDO for $79. Bought Lincoln cent from roll off ebay for $7 for the roll. One coin was sold as an ANACS VF Damaged DDO Die#1 for $32. On my 15th roll found another but was ANACS Fine Die#2 sold for $32.
1936-S Indian Head 5 cent bought for .50 and sold as an VF RPM#1 for $12. Many other RPMs and a few RPDs which sold for a small premium.

  • I don't know about best all-time, but I few years ago I bought a half dozen Franklins from a guy on Ebay for like $3 a piece. He dropped them off at a coin store nearby and I picked them up. I was stunned by how nice they were...

Just this past month, I sent the best two off to NGC to see what they would slab at... 1962 MS66 and 1963 MS66... image

  • I didn't buy the silver proof set, but I bought the 1999 quarters proof set when it came out. I was debating at the time whether I should get the full proof set but decided not to because I wasn't really into collecting proof sets, but just wanted the quarters. Since 2000, when the Sacagewa dollars came out, I started buying the whole proof set. Now I'm kicking myself for not getting the full 1999 proof set, not only because it's gone up so much, but also because I have a "mismatched" set compared to my 2000-2004 proof sets...

I've flipped a lot of coins quick that have done really well. My best long term investment right now has to be my SVDB in 65BN. I bought it Jan. of last year for just under $1700. It would bring about $800-$900 more now.

My best coin investment was a PCGS MS67 1942-s Washington quarter that I purchased for $380.00 back in 1998. I consigned it to a dealer at the last Long Beach show and got $1650.00 for it after he took his cut. With that money I was able to get an original 1949 double mint set, a PCGS MS65 1934-p Buffalo nickel and a new digital camera, so now I will be able to post pics very shortly. image

  • Sadly I don't think ive made many investments at all in coins. image Nothing has gone up except for a couple of dollars. Although I did buy 10 silver ounces awhile back, real cheap. Then in March sold them and made enough profit to buy a shirt and a couple cds.

Two years ago I bought an ICG MS68 Roosie off eBay for $90. I showed it to a dealer at long beach and he
offered me $600 for it. I thought he was nuts until a month later I learned he sold it for $3000 in a PCGS
MS68 holder. Thats when I learned all about PCGS. Since then I have bought 4 raw coins off ebay for
under $100 each and have since sold them all for over $15K. I don't think I would call this investing as
the title of this thread ask.

Spent over 650.00 for a Morgan in 1980 that is worth maybe 75.00 today.image Still the best coin investment I've made simply because of the lesson learned.

Most of these stories are not investments but upgrades or buying too cheap from the unknowledgable.

Paid $135 for this 1918-S Standing Liberty Quarter in the early 1970's when there were not yet any slabbed coins... and it recently came back certified as PCGS MS-64 FH which I am told is worth over $3000 image

I bought an unopened 1961 proof set for $15 earlier this year - it contained a double die half that now resides in a PCGS PR66 holder. (value over 100 times my investment)

I also bought a 1953 proof set last year in original packaging for $225. The nickel came back a PR67DCAM. (value over 20 times my investment)

I still grin when I think of these finds - it keeps me going to coin shows.
