The entire premise of your thread is incorrect. Toned coins are not a craze or fad, not by a longshot. Nor have they been in the closet anytime in the recent past to my knowledge as far as prices realized. Additionally, some of the most dedicated and knowledgeable collectors are avid collectors of toned coins, and continue to pay huge sums for the right coins when available for sale.
Beautifully toned pieces have been both popular and realizing significant premiums since at least the late 1980's, I wouldn't call a track record like that a craze or fad.

"Beautifully toned" being the operative word here. Personally I do not believe "colored" coins were even pursued until the recent past.
I did not say it was a "fad" (damn, I wish people would stop twisting my statements), I said "craze" the meaning of which I meant the "enthusiasm".
Beautifully toned is one thing, however, earlier this year people were buying everything and anything that had "color" included in its description, whether it was "Beautiful" color or run-of-the-mill "color" or outright FUGLY!

Until then, I'll just do what I can.
Wonderfully colorful toned coins with lots of luster are pretty.

<< <i>Color is definately "out" -- in particular, rainbow toned roosies are now worthless....if you are stuck with any, I'll bail you out because I am very sympathetic to collectors who are "taken in" by fads...it's just the right thing to do... >>
I don't see it as a fad, and if they are worthless, great cheaper for me to purchase. I actually like white lustorus coins better than toned, usually, but if theres lots of attractive color, that doesn't hide nicks/scratches ill buy one.

NoGvmnt, get a copy of the Superior Galleries Hoffecker Sale from 1986 or 87. There were many, many vivid and beautifully colored bag-toned Morgan Dollars from the Continental Bank Hoard in this sale. Many of these raw, "colored" Morgans sold for thousands of dollars apiece.

If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
