I haven't seen those -- and can't imagine why one would gold-plate them ... unless they're poor quality to start with. What will they think of next -- colorizing them? Uh, don't go there!
I dunno about those plated coins.. I've seen some odd circ coins with plating about, but not many. I can't imagine they'd sell anywhere but ebay
On the Weimar coins, I don't really bother with them coz they're pricey as you said, but I noticed that they seem pretty popular. Thing is, if you go to a show or a decent store they don't seem especially rare for type or quality? Maybe Askari can add a more informed comment.
I live on Augartenstrasse and just across the Zoo on Karlstrasse is a place called the Münzenbox, it only has numitmatic products but no actual coins which is kind of infuriating. The other place, Kroker und Walsch has a poor selection. They have some nice coins but the nicest ones aren't for sale which is even more infuriating.
I wanted a 1901 Königreich anniversary 2 mark piece and they one they had for sale was lousy, they had another one but it was a sample only for the acrylic coin it was in. Maddening.
There are several reasons for the popularity of Weimar coinage. A lot of Weimar silver ended up melted for national payments of WWI reparations. Keeping in mind the Germans' version of the "Great Depression" -- much worse than ours, as bad as it was -- a lot of silver coinage was hoarded too. During WWII, a lot of it got spent on the black market, where it was melted to make it more portable (i.e., smuggle-able) since it was illegal to export silver and gold under the Nazi regime. Likewise, silver and gold were useful for Nazi officials to pay for their being smuggled to other lands, purchase false papers and/or citizenships, etc.
You added the Link to the gold plated Nazi coins. You say you are in Karlsruhe right now, can you see the auctions og the coins??? I live also in germany but I can not open these auctions. I get a error from Ebay that it is forbidden in "my country". I wrote that to ebay before because the Swastika it is not forbidden in Germany on coins and stamps! I have made a new ebay profile from an other country but it is also locked! So I´m wondering that you can see the items???
Hi Eric! My name is also Eric and I'm in Germany too (Stuttgart)
I know what you mean about ebay. I can see right now 76 items listed on the link that Darkhorse gave, but not many of them can be clicked on? I think most of those are listed by the same seller and the problem may be in how he listed them. There are some on that page that I can click on. I've never had problems viewing Nazi coins on ebay, but in every other category, Maps, Books, whatever ebay blocks it if it simply mentions World War II in any way. (For example, I was looking for US military maps of the Pacific from during World War II, something that has nothing to do with the Nazis but ebay blocks me from seeing all of that here in Germany!!)
eBay is a little sneaky. They cue the anti-fascist block according to what language you use on your computer. I used to get the blocks too until I removed my German language option. Ditto France & Italy.
Hello spoon (Hi Eric ) and Askari and all the others out there!
Thank you for the information about the blocking at Ebay. But there is no problem with the coins and stamps at ebay.de, they know about the problems in the other Ebay´s.
What I really like about the Nazi "gold" auctions is that the coins are said to bear the likeness of Hitler when the coin is actually labelled "Paul von Hindenburg."

I don't think it's that.. I wish it were. I tried removing German language supports from my browser and Win but I'm still blocked?? I think it's IP locations, I'm going thru T-Online. Maybe it's both? Annoying either way
Eric, I'm sorry for you.. It's nice and sunny down here today! (OK, so it's only the first sunny day this week...)
Bbbut... sumnom.. they both have mustaches! How can you be sure it's not really Hilter with, y'know, someone else's name attached? Huh? huh?
I surf ebay.de fairly often (Drei... Zwei... Eins... Meins!), there are many things available but never in the condition I'd like. I notice a lot of cleaned coins as well. Of course there's the language barrier as well.
I'd like the Frankfurt Taler from the 1860s with the frau or the Gedenkthaler one with the buildings. I don't know how much they usually run for though. I saw a great Swiss thaler in Stuttgart that I should've snatched up though but I felt obligated to buy German for some reason.
They may indeed use both methods, Eric & Eric. Another US eBayer told me that was how to fix my problem and it certainly did the trick. As shoddy as eBay's programming techniques are, I'm not surprised that there isn't the same problem with stamps or other problems with eBay.de.

Is that why that Hindenburgh was gold plated?

Weimar
