When you purchase a coin and some says it was "pedigreed by XXXXX" ............what exactly does that mean. Was it a raw coin someone purchased and than submitted it?? Please explain! Thanks from Mike

There are some however that do not care for pedigreed coins from not so well known collections and the pedigree makes the coins less desireable because some collectors do not like to have the pedigree on the PCGS insert.
Pedigrees in my opinion are useless unless they are connected to a memorable set or they are coins pedigreed to you and you want to keep the coins for a very long time (braggin' rights).
It means that the coin is identified as having been associated with a particular owner or collection. There are many well know, important names, although the one that tends to stand above the rest is "Eiliasberg" (I'm sure I spelled it wrong). You will also see pedegrees in auction catalogs.
The grading services sometimes list the pedigree on a slabbed coin if they can verify the pedigree. You will also run into pedigrees from PCGS registry sets. There are a lot of these. Here are a few examples: "Joshua II" (mercury dimes", "Chesapeake" (MS Franklins), "Woodbury Collection (MS Franklins- my set)
or at least one important past owner of the said specific coin that is highly known in the numismatic community for better or worse............................

"# A valuable pedigree. In the rare coin market a pedigree is a contributing factor in the pride of ownership and value of the coin. Coins from famous collections such as Eliasberg, Norweb, Garrett, etc., usually command a premium in the marketplace. If you participate in the PCGS Set RegistrySM program your set may qualify for the free pedigree service. The free pedigree service policy is as follows:
* The set must be 100% complete.
* The set must be in the top 5 in the Registry.
* Sets with less than 10 coins may be pedigreed if warranted. The decision will be that of PCGS experts.
* The Registry member is responsible for shipping and handling costs.
* The fee for pedigrees for coins submitted after the initial pedigree is $5 a coin."
