Canadian 1998-1908 Proof set, worth it?

When the RCM first came out with the 1998-1908 proof set I listened to many complain about it as another set the RCM produced to bilk collectors. I have since taken another look and like what I see more now than before. What are your thoughts on this set?

The set is cool to own for no other reason then the Large Cent doesn't list the country's name.

The matte finish set doesn't have Canada on the cent. The RCM corrected this before the Proof set was struck.

I'm not really into most of the RCM sets, though I do own this one (both actually, matte and proof).

Paul, what do you think of the matt proof set? In other words, which set do you prefer? I haven't seen a good image of the matt proof set yet.

That's one of the very few recent RCM products that I actually like. Mostly its due to having the old time Canadian reverses which I find elegant in their simplicity. The portrait of QE2 I could love without.

    I prefer the Proof set.

The Matte set isn't just a matte finish - the RCM tried some sort of aged antique finish, which sort of looks like they tried to pickle the coins. Some days I think it's really attractive, other days not so much. That said, the Matte set does have the cent without 'Canada' on it.
  • I prefer the proof set as well. The matte set looks terrible under magnification.

I recently bought one of each type set, and I think both are nice in-hand, though the "antique finish" is kind of weird. One thing I noticed when shopping around is that these sets catalog about $50 each but usually go for way less. image
  • Well I went and ordered a set lastnight. It'll be a few weeks before it gets here from "the Great White North."

  • Yes, get the proof finish. The Matte finish was done 'artificially' and created numerous scratches on some of the coins. Excuse my lack of correct terminology. I remember returning my sets (bought 5 for the family) because they looked horrible. They had a tough time selling them after that, and many retailers in Canada still advertise deals on both sets, in fact, they were being deeply discounted iirc, very soon after thier introduction. Like all the RCM mint products, when the production is in the thousands, they should not be bought as investments, but as the giftware they appear to be...
