To Break or not to Break a Vintage Set???

Hey Gang:

Just wanted to post this and get other peoples ideas on this.

Presently, I have the #3 registered set from the 1955 AA FB Cards.

I am kinda tearing myself apart here, trying to figure out if I would want to break the set up, or sell it whole.

There are a few people looking at it as a set, but frankly I am getting very tired of waiting on them to get back with me, make a decision and being very tired of not being able to get a hold of them as well.

Anyway, I am sure if I were to break it up, I would make a bit more money on it. But then there is the time to do so.

Ideally I would have always liked to see the set kept together, but then if i were to sell it whole, how would I know that would happen anyway.

Well, everyone let me know your thoughts.

Thanks
Rob Ruth

Break it. There are a lot more collectors that would buy several cards and pay a premium then buyers that would pay an equal premium for the whole set....IMHO

    Rob,

I agree with mrc32.I would imagine with the prices that the cards in that set are bringing right now,you may see 10 -20 % more for your efforts.I would also speculate that you do not have near the amount in your set that you would get on selling and your profit margin will be pretty nice.If you do sell,I would definately break it up.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

you could always put the whole set on ebay for the top dollar price that you want, if it doesn't sell it cost you about $5 in listing fees for trying, and if it does, then you get what you wanted out of it

  • if you break up a set, is it smarter to list individual cards all at once, or sell them spaced out over a few months?

How much are you hoping to get for it?

That isn't exactly something I am going to discuss on an open forum.

When you consider my set, it has (1) PSA 10, (42) more PSA 9's with the rest of it being in PSA 8 condition.

Considering some PSA 9's are selling for up around 5 times SMR. You can get an idea of how far the SMR is out of wack on this set.

Oh, this is an easy one to answer.

You just sell me the few cards I asked about at SMR, and keep the rest of the set together... that way it's a win / win situation. image

I've never understood just buying an already-built set whole. Isn't the whole point of collecting a set the pleasure and accomplishment of building it a few precious cards at a time? Sure, if you're Fogel or somebody at that level you could just buy whatever set you want, if it's available, and instantly be one of the registry leaders. But I thought even the rich collectors liked to work on their sets over the years.

That's just a point of curiosity. Breaking it up does sound like a lot of trouble. After selling off the stars and low-pops, then you still have a bunch of commons to sell singly and in small lots. I guess if the stars and low-pops alone fetch the price you want....

  • I am not going to discuss in an open forum the price that I am looking for my set.

That ist just plain common sense.

  • Go to the thread about Musium of Sports History. Someone posted that he was jumping into that set. Get in touch with MOSH and see if you can sell him a nice group.
  • Rob you know my opinion. Also think about by breaking it up you will not get that 1 large check that could red flag you.

Marty i think the option you mention has been taken care of image

And to all of you that all asking about price if you have to ask its to much.
Rob is 100% correct smr is a joke on these cards at worst case double smr if it sells as a whole breaking it would say 2.5 to 3 times smr would be my guess.

You guys need to understand this is not your avg set.Mercer mentioned the price the 57 and 62 bought in the dont even compare to Robs set and it would stand out for sure in any auction house.I am sure theu would give it top billing to say the least!!.

By the way i can say the above without a doubt as i just broke my set that was rated 4th 1 behind Robs and was almost a whole .5% behind him.He had 30 more nines and the above mentioned 10.(only 5 total 10,s by the way)

The avg of sales on my cards was over 3x smr

  • NO BREAK IT IS BEST.

What i ment if he did sell it though a auction house i think it would comand a much higher premium then the 57 or 62 sets did based on the gpa and the interest in All Americans
