1883 Hawaiian 25 cent piece

I am looking for info on this coin for a collecting friend. What this appears to be is the proof copper version of this coin.

The info we have available is that circulation strikes were in silver and the proof coins were in copper. The mintage for proof coins was supposedly only 18 coins.

We need info so that my friend, a coin dealer, can make a good faith offer to buy the coin. Any and all help is appreciated....Thanks, Ken

While I am not terribly experienced with Hawaiian coinage, something about the lettering on that coin sets off my alarm bells.

I would advise your friend to tread carefully.

The portrait, too, now that I looked at it again.

A proof coin would have a MUCH better strike, I would think.

But I have never seen a copper proof Hawaiian coin, so... ?

I don't know if it is real or not. This is a token that is generally given out to tourists.

  • Here is a circulation strike for sale. Probably no help.

The coin looks fake. First, the hair detail is wrong. Next, there shouldn't be an "MH" above the denomination (HAPAHA). Now that I think about it, almost everything looks wrong.

Shouldn't the actual strike be the same on the proofs and the circs? Compare the space between the lettering and the edge on the Yahoo auction coin, with how close to the edge the lettering is on the one your friend is looking at. Maybe that's what set off Rob's alarm.

The reverse design is much more like the auction coin than the token, but I echo Rob's advice.

  • The example at Coinfacts.com states their is no mint mark. The NH doesn't belong there as was already pointed out.

Guaranteed bogus. I owned one of the real copper ones a while back and it looked nothing like the coin above.

Definitely bogus. The real thing is much more professionally rendered.
