If Just having fun ever gets a FS 60-d I'd love to buy that non-FS ms66!

There are not many upgrades available for any of the top 3 sets!
It's a great series, and I had a lot of fun putting it together.
I also have some good schtuff for trading if you have an upgrade. My e-address: Iamjusthavingfun@hotmail.com

Now that I look at the closeup, the steps are not that good. My eyes must be going bad.

The Ludlow Brilliant Collection (1938-64)
This was a hard series because of the full steps. Many tough judgment calls along the way and as Mitch will confirm, I've passed up several pop-tops along the way because I thought they were either overgraded or didn't really deserve the full steps designation. I've really tried to concentrate on quality within the grade. So when I submit the collection to PCGS for tagging and regrading, I'm hoping to get several upgrades.
The 1954-S in MS67 Full Steps that Mark was talking about won't be one of them. The steps are there, but the 67 is marginal. Mark: about the scans, I'm out of the country right now and will be for a while. I'll see if my secretary took a scan before I brought it to a safety-deposit box. If she did, I'll send it to Mitch or somebody to post. I can't figure this thing out for posting pic's.
Also of interest: I have another 1954-S that I think has a good shot at an MS 66 Full steps.
Dear LALASD4: Thanks for the lead on the 1967. Like I said, I'm out of the country, but maybe I can prevail on Mitch to look at that coin for me.
Thanks again and ...
best wishes,
Just Having Fun
graded MS67FS by PCGS selling in a private transaction for less than
$30K?
I believe the greatest thing about the JHF collection is perhaps something JHF has not even thought of recently - the history/pedigree of each of the coins in the set. Many of the coins date back to the roots of registry collecting - literally, back to the days of the 1998/1999 registry, when it was just a few dozen collectors participating. Back then, there was no internet registry -a paperback book was published by PCGS each February or March and only when the paperback came out in print once a year (or as it went off to the printer) did one know for sure they finished first or second or fifth in a particular series. Take a coin like JHF's 1955(d) Jeff in PCGS-MS66FS - the cornerstone of the Steve Pierce #1 collection of Jeffs in the 1999 Registry - a set which was noted in the Registry paperback book by the way as "a set which might never be bettered" (or close to the words used to describe the collection)!! And, Steve Pierce's Jeffs were an incredible accomplishment of that time period. Just as Registrycoin's #1 Jeff collection by the year 2000 (he actually worked a set into a dead heat tie with Steve Pierce, which was an equally amazing accomplishment back then).
Want to talk about good, honest registry competition - all along (back in 1999/2000) as Registrycoin (Steve Heller) "fought" to meet the challenge of Steve Pierce's set (the set which might "never be duplicated"), these guys competed for the best nickels available during that time period (and many came out of the woodwork, as this was the first time in a long time Jeffs were in the spotlight again). But, here is the neat thing - during the competition, Steve Pierce and Steve Heller developed a friendship and appreciation of each other. When Steve Heller finally bought the last coin needed to tie Steve Pierce's collection (and the neat thing was SH had a great number of coins SP needed and SP had a great number of coins SH needed at that moment) - SP unselfishly asked SH if he would simply like to buy his Jeff collection at a very reasonable price at the time. And being the gentleman SH is, SH invited SP to purchase his set at the same reasonable price as he told SP that SP truly deserves to be the #1 collector of this series.
These guys truly respected each other and literally couldn't figure out who should be the new "King" of Jeffs! In the meantime, I found a buyer for BOTH of their sets and a new chapter of Jeff collecting was written when "Mr. Mint" essentially bought out both sets and combined them to create the greatest Jeff collection at that time! Mr. Mint is known for his dealings in sports cards, but had always been a coin collector and another true gentleman of the hobby.
But, the "crown jewels" of the SH and SP collections reside in JHF's present collection and it is nice to know the rich history surrounding many of these coins and the events of 1999/2000 that led, IMHO, to Registry collecting at its finest, including the pursuit of the greatest coins in friendly competiiton with one another and the unselfish respect towards fellow collectors that was clearly present in the early days of Registry collecting.

Thank you for your very nice comments.
This series did provide quite special competitions and fine relationships. Just for a little more background, in the beginning, basically all the registrants in a series, particularly the Jeffs, knew (all about) each other, but through their conduct during, what was a very furious attempt to look through tons of original rolls, hourly perusing eBay, and lots more, up to and including asking Mitch if he can find "that new pop. 1", it truely was a competition to make one proud no matter win, place, or show.
Steve Pierce, many other pioneers, including MisterMint really had an incredibly good feel for the Jeffs, and Jeffs within the Registry.
JHF has made those strong efforts look rather simple, in comparison to his accomplishment in this and others areas of numismatics.
This is a group of people who have had fun all the way from the birth of the PCGS registry through today.
Playing the game by the rules with others who do so in a friendly manner, even with intense competition, is very fun, and appropriate.
Thank you again for the mention. I very much enjoyed this particular series, and especially those who were my (very competitive) friends.
Not so, Steve. This set simply builds on all those great efforts put together by Mr. Mint, Steve Pierce, and yourself. I can't tell you any more which coins came from whom -- Unfortunately, that's lost in the mist of time. But as the guy said, "If I can see further, it's because I stand on the efforts of those who came before me." And I really feel that.
If some time you ever want to see this collection -- and/or my Shield Nickel, Roosie dime, Standing Liberty collections -- let me know and I can set it up for the next time I'm back in the country. They're all awesome sets, and I feel honored to be their owner. Each and every one of which has a fascinating history, much like the one Mitch laid out for the Jefferson Nickels.
Though we've never met, warm regards,
Just Having Fun

Mr Mint bought the top 2 collections in the pcgs registries to claim that he was the greatest collector of FS Jeffersons! However short lived that was! Another FS collector and I helped Al get his 1954-S, shortly thereafter he sold out! We were disappointed, to say the least, commenting, so much for collecting FS nickels! Along comes JHF, whoever he is, and in turn, buys up Al's accumulation! Sorry folks, having the money to buy up all the big number slabs is really not coin collecting! Most credit here should go to the original collectors of those two top sets back when. That's my opinion!
JHF, the 1954-S ANACS 66 5 stepper came from C. A., his pedigree is on the holder! If you're truly a FS Jefferson nickel collector, appreciate the coin and keep it that way!
In regards to who has the best personal collections out there, Frank Corso, Ray Overby, Steve Wells (ie; Bern Nagangast) easily come to mind and plus a couple of other collections that I've seen. Early die state FS Jefferson nickels is the only way to collect any modern series. But then again, I'm talking from outside of the pcgs registry pride, something I'll never understand! Enjoy the hobby!

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
My Jefferson Nickel Collection
Geez - I actually have common ground with Leo - that was my exact point and for which JHF fully agreed. Once again, great job Registrycoin on building a world class Jeff collection back in the early days of Registry collecting! Ditto to Steve Pierce and many of the other pioneers.
