An AMAZING set just opened for viewing

Browsing through the Registry, I came upon a truly amazing accomplishment --

the Legend Collection of Mint State Seated Liberty Dollars. image

This is a long series, full of tough coins AND legendary rarities, and yet Tradedollarnut has managed to finish it with 100% uncirculated pieces, all with great eye appeal and with 28 of the 44 pieces being Pop Tops.

Amazing, just Amazing! (where's the emoticon for jaw on floor?)

Congratulations to a great numismatist for such a historic achievement.image

I generally don't think much of Seated Coinage... but there's a couple in there that really made me sit up and go... "WOW!"

Thirteen Pop 1/0 in a very tough series. Incredible job! Not just having the money, but finding the coins. I know many of these came from the same source, but it is still an incredible set!!!

Yeah, but the 1860-O has 8 coins graded higher!
Ok, now that I said that I can put my absolute envy away.

    UNBELIEVABLE, WOW.

And for a (relatively) small collector like myself, the best part is Tradedollarnut is willing to show us, his fellow collectors his collection. BEAUTIFUL!

It becoming more common for top collections to be 'private', sure they're top collections, but if I (we) can 't see the grades (or pictures) I get the feeling of elitistism.

Thanks again Tradedollarnut for sharing this great collection with us all.

Thanks for the props, guys. A couple of thoughts:

I firmly believe in sharing my sets with the collecting community. Yes, there are very valid reasons for keeping a set closed. It's very maddening when someone takes a shot at you on a coin you need and refuses to negotiate in good faith. There are several dealers I won't do business with anymore due to situations just like that. It's one thing to start high and be willing to negotiate to place the coin, it's quite another to say take it or leave it and then sell it elsewhere for less. That's dirty pool. But at this point in the set, I feel it can be revealed. Also, the entire set will be on display at the ANA courtesy of PCGS and Legend.

As was stated, putting a set together in a popular classic series is often more about opportunity than cost. There are many upgrades out there that I can afford, but have not been afforded the opportunity to purchase them. It's also about timing. So many things had to go right to acquire the coins that kept me interested in pursuing the set that I'm amazed it's gotten to where it is. For instance, Laura just happened to walk by David Akers' table at FUN in January and he had his personal coins for sale. I chalk it up to fate that she called me on her cell phone rather than tell me about it that night as she usually does. Five minutes later and the coins would have been sold elsewhere. Acquiring those pieces inspired me further in my drive to complete the set in the finest condition possible.

I apologize for my pictures - I begged borrowed and stole where possible in order to make up for my complete lack of skill in that arena. Perhaps one day I'll have them professionally done in order to truly show the amazing eye appeal of the coins.

Oh, BTW - I passed on a PCGS MS65 1860-O because I thought I could find a better one. It's been almost a year since then. Oops. image

Incredable indeed.. Laura has a great eye and if she called my phone and said Hey guess what, Id be HOW MUCH MONEY YA GOT ON YOU??..anyway thanks for sharing something with me id never see otherwise, but then again that pretty much goes for every set put together by you guys...incredable indeed.

Without a doubt the most spectacular and amazing seated denominational set ever put together. There might be some hidden ones out there getting assembled, but for now, this takes the cake.
Eliasberg had nothing on TDN, who happens to have the knack for picking up coins at just the right time. 10 years ago most everyone, including me, would have said such a set was a pipe dream...impossible....well start dreaming cuz it's staring right at you.
And no doubt TDN will upgrade this a bit more too. I'm glad to see he saw the "light" of mint state seated. Now let me go outside and howl at the moon.............aaawooooooooooooooo!

TDN, the Mint State Seated Dollar set is just mindboggling. There is no rational reason why some of these coins even exist in the grades you have put together! Absolutely astonishing.

The Hayes 1866 might be my fav for sentimental reasons, but there are many others that will compete for being my fav in terms of eye appeal, etc.

We can all cite the uber-rarities as being favs, but let me tell you about some of the more pedestrian pieces that I remember liking: the 1871 (recent acquisition) is really sweet with beautiful satiny luster; the 1861, which I should have bought when offered, is very cameo due to its exceptionally eye appealing combo of striated fields and frosty devices; the 1870, a fully original, eye appealing specimen with exceptional satiny luster (and was promised first shot to me by its previous owner!!!).

I've seen nearly all of them, and it actually was counterproductive for me to view so many in one sitting...

    TDN-
Truly an amazing achievement. I cannot recall any other Seated Dollar sets as nice as yours. I completely agree with your comments on timing. I was not planning a trip to Pittsburgh this summer but I think I will have to reconsider just to see your set.

Cosmicdebris: I won't fight you to the death for your 1866 $1 as long as you let me have TDN's Aker's 1854 $1. image

It is simply the most awesome seated dollar I have had the pleasure of seeing.

Now you all get out of my way, I already told TDN that I want that coin first, on a 5 year lay-a-way plan!image

I must admit that we are all fortunate to see right before our own eyes the building of the next world class collection in the same league as the Norwebs, Lovejoy and Bareford, etc.

What is even better is this collector's willingness to share his collection and time with the rest of us. We are most fortunate!

Thanks Bruce, now I have to try and find a way to go to the ANA this summer. Seeing this set would certainly make the trip worthwhile.

I'd like to express my sincere gratitude to Laura. Not only did she put up with my extreme collector drive, but she also built the JFS set - which was the crowning acquisition that finished this collection.

I know I can drive her nuts, but she does a great job of finding the great coins despite that fact! image

    TDN,

My birthday is coming up. Any runnersup you can send my way steeply discounted by, say, 100% or so? (I'm thinking of the *other* 1854...)

I have just be "warned" not to overstep. The Akers '54 is off limits, but the undergrade is ok.

    Rough crowd these coin weenies!

It obviously has taken alot of dedication and persistence

How many years has it taken to put that group together?
    - in other words, out of the coins in the set, which has been owned the longest and for how long?

I am truly envious of what you have accomplished so far, and wonder if your focus has drifted to other sets or a continual upgrade for another 20 years?

A very keen strategy had to be invovled in order to put together that kind of set in such a short period of time. Very smart and classy collection!!!!

My favorite mint state set of anything.

I'd also like to add my congrats to the list. TDN has assembled yet another world class set (the first being Trade Dollars). I doubt we'll see a close contender anytime soon (but what a race it would be). "Simply stunning" is too shallow an expression for this set. I agree with WOW!!! The 70-S and 73-CC's are HUGE coins.

The JFS collection was put together mainly by Legend for a special customer in the Midwest. It comprised many different collections, including the seated dollars. Because of my knowledge of this person, it was never my intention to do the finest set - I did not want to trample on the toes of a fellow collector. It wasn't until FUN of this year, when I purchased the 1848, 1849 and 1854 at the show that I got truly interested in upgrading the set to the finest ever completed. At the same time, I was offered the JFS seated dollar set in its entirety through Legend. I jumped at the chance to be the first to complete the set in uncirculated condition! The coins I kept from JFS were the 1846, 1847, 1859, 1859-O, 1859-S, 1860-O, 1861, 1865, 1868, 1869 and of course the magnificent James A Stack specimen of the 1870-S dollar. This replaced the Eliasberg AU50 that Legend had purchased in the Share collection.

Based on the collector's eye for the seated dollars, and the knowledge that Legend did most of his buying, I would say there are plenty of special coins in that commem set. Good luck and happy hunting, Bruce!
