1990 no S LINCOLN REGISTRY COIN UP ON EBAY

I have been following this coin on EBAY the past month. It was apparently slabbed in April as a PCGS PR68 DCAM. The seller put it up at $11,000 with no bids. (Auction #3911722680.) Now it's back and has 14 bids (3 bidders) with a top bid of $7,600.(Auction #3913892784). The reserve is still higher. It closes at 11PM eastern tonight (Wednesday) and it will be interesting if it sells. I think it is a good buy at the $7,000 level, but the seller is looking for the moon. No doubt it will get sold on the seller's next try if he lowers his reserve a bit. Good luck to anyone going after this coin for their registry. It is a keeper. Steveimage

Figured they weren't making any more of 'em... image

    David,
Congratulations on snipping that one with 9 seconds to go! I believe you are absolutely correct that "they weren't making any more of 'em..." With the PR69 going for more than $14k and now this PR68 going for more than $9k it is obvious that this coin is destined to be one of the classics in the entire Lincoln series. To my way of thinking this is only natural. The coin is an obvious error coin to the naked eye to anyone who collects Lincoln proof coins and knows that all the proofs since 1968 have an "S" mintmark. The coin LOOKS really beautiful with the deep cameo features. Soon, IMHO, a PCGS or NGC slabbed coin like this coin will no longer be available on EBAY but will only be found at major auctions. There are probably another 50 or so of these coins still in the original proof sets. They will be the best bargins left because buyers won't know if they are getting PR65 or PR69 until they get them slabbed and the market will differentiate by grade. As I have said before, this coin has no where to go but UP. It is a "keeper". Steveimage

Dpoole: Did you see the link to the other thread I gave? You should leave explanatory feedback to warn people while you have the chance.

Steve. Thanks! That was my thinking. I think this variety still has legs. And the fact that it could be had on Ebay, away from the auction juice, seemed too good to pass up.

Which brings me to the second point:

Haletj, I did not recall him as being the shill bidder. Ol' coinsrare is at it again (he can't seem to get his feedback count up, can he??) image

It does seem odd that the guy would start the auction so low and waste time shilling it up, since he had the reserve set so high. Looks like I paid the reserve, which is what it woulda cost, shill or not.

Steep price, but I figured auction juice would have run it up, too.

The guy has nice stuff. If he's shilling with material like that, well, that's just dumb.

    Just so you all know:

I contacted the seller about the shill bidding. He was just devastated.

Seems he'd given his Ebay duties to a younger relative to manage and list for him, for a commission. Upon hearing the news, he confronted the kid, who said something like "That's the way you make money on Ebay." Well, yeah. You can make money robbing banks, too. Anyhow, the seller's taken the kid off Ebay duty, and put him to work rolling Lincolns.

The guy feels awful about all this, and says he's emailing some of his former buyers, offering some kind of compensation. He's a dedicated collector, and the last thing he wants to do is harm the hobby and earn pariah status among the rest of us.

The problem apparently has been taken care of, thanks, to your efforts.

    Nice work, guys!

You can't make these stories up! David, thanks for clearing this up. You may have helped the seller as well as obtaining one of the rarest Lincoln cents around. Congratulations again. Steveimage
