What does "watching" an auction mean?

I notice on this new my ebay screen a column called # of watchers. What exactly does this mean? Does it correlate to the number of snipes an auction is likely to receive, or is it just voyeurs??
Always buying high grade Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton cards!!!

  • It refers to the number of people that have your auction on their "watch list."

The whole new myEbay is a disaster, IMO. But, the one nice feature is seeing how many people are watching your auctions.

No, it doesn't monitor how many snipes are set up - it is strictly a count of ebayers who have put that auction on their watch list. When watch lists were limited to a maximum of 30 auctions, I was fairly conservative in making sure I tagged only the auctions I was truly interested in. Now that the new system seems to allow an unlimited watch list, I watch auctions I'm not interested in bidding on but would like to know what the closing price is. I watch auctions to see how a particular seller is doing. I watch auctions to see if a faulty description gets modified. In short, I watch auctions for many reasons other than bidding. IMO, that renders the number of watchers column pretty useless, unless, of course, I'm the only guy out there who has no life.

    Good for you.
  • The new watchlist is limited to 100 and for me to know that i guess that means I have no life also.image

I think many of us have no life. It is inversely proportional to your post count.

If so, Vargha could be reincarnated several times and still have no life. image

I use the watch list for several different purposes - to track cards I'm interested in seeing the closing price on, on cards I'm considering bidding on (especially if a seller has multiple cards up from the same set), and to remind me to check out a seller's auctions (by watchlisting the first of theirs to close).
