What's the rarest coin-population wise- in your Registry Set

I don't know how to upload pix here yet but I'll keep practicing. While I have a lot of "None highers"

in my set, my rarest coin must be the PCGS 67 1940-D pop 18 / 0...what's yours? If you can post pix,

PLEASE DO.image

In my silver MS Wash quarter set, it is probably my 1932(p) in PCGS-MS67 (pop 1). I believe I have a scan of the coin on my website. But, I have not posted my variety set yet and my 1937(p) DDO in PCGS-MS66 probably gives the 1932(p) a "run for the money". image

While I actually have a few coins that are the finest known by 4 grades, this one is my favorite - tho it is the finest by only 3 grades. It's the Garrett specimen of the 1848 Seated Liberty dollar, later in the Fairfield Collection. It is certified by PCGS as MS66 and the next finest certified at either PCGS or NGC [or rumored to exist, for that matter] is MS63:

Mine would probably be my PCGS 67 1942-S Washington quarter pop 21 / 1. Sorry no pics I'm still working on imaging coins. The coin in my avitar is an NGC 67 1940-D I'm hoping may crossover one day. I also have a PCGS PR69 1954 Jefferson nickel pop 6 / 0, and a PCGS MS67 1942-D Jefferson nickel pop 10 / 0. image

Very, nice 1848 dollar TDN, where can I get mine?

I don't have any PCGS registry sets so by definition I don't have any low pop coins.

I thought at first it would be a Seated Liberty coin, but after checking the most recent population report I have (Jan. 2004), it turns out to be a 1928-S Mercury in MS66 non-FB (22/2). I have a self-made 1964-D nickel in MS66 (pop 8/0) that isn't in a Registry set

This is funny... my best popwise is an 86-p nickel ms66, pop 3/0... and it is a pretty lousy coin I'd say one could easily find a nicer in a roll or mint set... i.e. it is actually one of my most common coins. I have a 64-p nickel ms66 pop 6/0 (only 2/0 in FS) so that's getting a little better, but in reality I consider my lowest pop coin to be a 1917-s ms64rd Lincoln, pop 47/15.
  • DAMDAM Posts: 2,410 ✭✭
I guess it would be my 1908 O Barber Dime...

    image

It's currently listed as pop 2/0 in MS67.

Although I have a number of top pop coins, I believe this has the fewest of them all.

3 POP MS64 1/0 coins and 1 POP MS63 2/1 in the same set. The 3/1 is wrong I know I cracked out the coin before resubmitting for pedigree.

I have 7 registry sets with 121 coins that are pop1.... of these 27 are 1/0 the toughest of these i feel are 1888 and 1889 in PR68 a 1888 MS68 the only 68 in the series these are 3cent nickels..recently add'd 2 tough walkers the only PR69 of the series and a really neat 1936 in PR68 but the best for last 4 commems that are 1/0 of these the Lexington in 68 is my favorite and i think toughest this is a real WOW type coin..

This 1875-S $20 is from the Stack collection of type coins. His pride and joy collection. It is not only the only MS-67 for the date but also for the entire type II $20 Liberties. The second finest 1875-S is in MS-64 and the second finest recorded grade for the type is in MS-65. I have shown close-ups elsewhere in this forum.

I have a MS66 1919-S Mercury Dime with a pop of 15/3. I would say thats the best I can do. I do have a couple of coins with non higher, but they have much higher pops in their grades (example 1945 Merc MS67 99/0).

I have a 1940 D PCGS ms68 Mercury that is POP 2/0, 1940 S PCGS ms68 Mercury that is POP 3/0 (with only 3 in 68FB graded). I think the 1940 s has a legitimate shot at being a PCGS ms69 because of the toning.

    I also have a 1945 S NGC ms69 Mercury that is POP 4/0.

Well, this isnt really a "finest known" since it isnt red, but it is the only MS66 certified by either of the two major grading companies. That's the closet I can get.

    1946-D (non-FS) Jefferson MS67 PCGS; pop 1/0.

    And just to be silly:
    1882-CC Morgan Fair-02 PCGS; pop 1
    1885-CC Morgan Fair-02 PCGS; pop 1
    1895-S Morgan Poor-01; pop 1

I have a 1918-P Merc pop 1/0 that is an MS66 NB coin purchased from Jon in NH. I also have a couple of pop 2/0 MS68s in the 40s, but I like the 1918 the best. Jon thought it had a shot at being a 67, but I am quite happy where it is.

    PCGS MS67 1951-D and PCGS MS67 1953-D, both pop. 12/0

OK, someone has to set the bar low.......a 1795 1/2 cent PE Punctuated Date in AG03RB...the only PCGS certified RB in any grade and therefore, pop 1/0. But it could be a mechanical error on the part of PCGS but that's how its listed.

I have a 1795 three leaves half PCGS VF20 that is 3/4. Not a very high grade, but this variety is a rare coin in any grade. Eliasberg's example of this variety was a scratched F12.

  • Since the question is "What's the rarest coin-population wise- in your Registry Set?" and not neccessarily from a high end view - then I have two POP 1's - Both are Carson City Morgans - 1880CC in FR 02, POP 1 with 7814 higher. The other is an 1891 CC in FR 02, POP 1 with 7957 higher (first generation "rattler" holder). I've got an 1893CC Morgan in for grading now and if it comes back a AG03, I think I'll ask for a presidential review!!image Later, CCGimage

Okay, I'm going to whine on this one. The rarest coin that I own is a PCGS holder is own that I can't even get onto a Registry. A 1876-S DDO Trade Dollar at VF-35. No other coins graded.

This is probably my lowest pop coin, a 1700 Great Britain half crown graded PCGS MS63. Unfortunately, there is no Registry set for it at this time. I've seen one other advertised, but I don't know how to tell how many there are (does anyone else?).

Stewart Blay with the MS70 RD 1919. A lot of MS69's... Stewart, of ALL your coins, what are your three favorite???

I have an 1854-O Half Dollar SPECIMEN MS63. No record of any proofs, but is considered unique. Mirror surfaces and strike like none of the other millions of 1854-O. NGC holder says SPECIMEN.

Wish I could /knew how to show pictures, but I have 1916-D dime, MS67 FB, 1942/1 dime MS66FB. Not sure how ACCURATE the reports, but I know they are up there. MS64 BROWN 1922 NO D Stronge Reverse is a 1/0, but only a brown. I am sure Stewart has the 65 RD. All not my most valuable ones, but best in terms of POP reports... All are PCGS, except for 1854-O Half Dollar...

It's the only type one proof ever slabbed by PCGS, any year, any condition. That's about as pop one as you can get.
