That is SO much money. I wouldn't pay that price if I hit the Powerball.

Is America a great country or what? $7076 for an encapsulated cardboard picture of Toby Atwell with nice corners! I wonder if Toby Atwell was ever paid $7000 in any year of his career.

great point Norty, I bet he wasnt. 7 grand for a card has me thinking that 50 of those cards equal the value some houses ?
it also had me thinking do the people with deep pockets expect to recoup these monies when and if these sets are sold? or does that even matter to them?
    Good for you.

Its amazing hearing about these idiots
  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 30,624 ✭✭✭✭✭
what is a matter with these idiots
  • Winpitcher,

The short term answer is no- I do not think that they could recoup the amount that they paid for these cards unless they find someone also as hungry as they are to finish off the set.

The long term answer is who Knows? I dont think that anyone could have predicted the crazy prices that some PSA examples have gotten 10 years ago, so maybe in 10 more years these cards will be worth double what they are today.

...........All it takes is 2 wealthy people who both want the same thing to make the market rise.

PS- anyone have any high end raw 53' color Bowmans that they want to sell to me for full Becket pricing???????

    LOL,

    miami3,

Good post. The only thing I'm thinking is that the short term answer might be maybe. However,
I think long term it could be tough.

Sorry if I offended you "pack collector", I see nothing wrong with stating that people are idiots for driving psa 8 prices through the roof, c'mon 7K for those cards seems a bit much...o by the way lighten up, I am not the only one that has had a negative comment on these threads
  • In response to the idiot statement from Perkdog, $7k for me might be relatively the same to me as what you pay to eat out at McDonald's and I would never say that you should stay home and eat rice and drink tap water, so please try to keep the boards nice, particularly when you have collectors who are long term collectors just putting the cards into their collections/display cases for themselves and later on their kids.

    Chris,

You don't owe anyone any explanations. If you are enjoying the hobby that's what counts!
Some could only dream to drop the coin on a card they want to make top notch sets.
Everyone has different goals and while some may consider that type of purchase extreme
they should at least respect it or tone down the negative comments.

    aconte
  • The population on that card is 13 8's and 0 9's...........out of the 13.....4 are accounted for on the registry.....plus there are other sets not on the registry that may have an 8.....these cards are in long-term collections ......so at most there are only 9 PSA 8's of that card available to the market......if a collector wants a set of all PSA 8's...then they are going to have to face some serious competition and pay a high price for it.

The amount one pays for something may seem crazy. I know cause my friends think I'm nuts for buying various watches, but if that is something that a person likes than they should be allowed to pay for what they want........that's what makes America great.......

    Chris

Great response, somewhat restrained but to the point.

These boards are filled with a wide demographic from all walks of life and all income levels. That is what makes them great.

Also Chris, regarding the above auction. GOOD FOR YOU.
I find that much of the negativity on these boards stems simply from envy. I know that I'll never drop 7K on a card, but at the same time I think it's great that there are many that can.

This is after all the COLLECTORS UNIVERSE !!!

    Have a great day.

  • It amazes me to no end. Some people just don’t understand.

For some people, if you have the means and desire to have something, it doesn’t matter how much it costs. You can always make more money. For some it’s easer than others. Who is going to call Marshall an idiot for buying his 52 Mantle for what he did. Back then it was extreme, but now it would be a bargain. I would never pay the money that some of the 1980 cards are going for but I’m not going to call them names. They have a stronger passion than me, that’s all and good for them. Why can’t we just be happy that someone is increasing their collection without trying to determine their profit/loss situation?

    Chris
  • I'd venture a guess that the winner paid much less than SMR for other cards in the set, including a few he may have submitted raw himself. All in all, I'd say he's sitting pretty well right about now, even with a $7,000 common.
  • Chris,

Congrats on the card - you have put together a very, very nice 53 bowman set. There is nothing wrong with spending the $'s to collect the 53 bowman set in high grade just like there is nothing wrong with collecting a 1980 topps set in low grade. I think it was a great pickup.

The other thing to keep in mind is that we don't really know the true populations of these cards. What if a dealer submitted a Lockman card 6 times to psa in trying for a 9 and each time it came back an 8. With the huge price difference between 8's and 9's, I would bet that the pops for most of the cards are overstated.

    Congrats again!

    Perkdog,

Chris has obviously done something right in his life to be able to drop $7,000 on a baseball card. Instead of calling him an idiot, maybe you should be asking him what he had done to be so successful. That kind of negativity is what we are trying to stay away from on these boards.

    Perkdog,

Simple logic would tell you that if someone has 7k to spend on
a card, then he probably has a college education and has a
well paying job. Therefore, your choice of words comes back to you
    for not realizing this.

Also, if you are an American, please try to use words in the spirit
of common decency. That is still alive and well in this country for
    many of us.

  • Well said guys,

I believe that when it comes to money and spending of it, all things are truly relative.

To some 7K might seem like a lot of money to put down on this card, but to others it could be the price of a good lunch at Sparks Steakhouse in NYC.

Take a look at other things that one could spend big bucks and get not a lot back in return......first class plane tickets instead of coach, a couple of hours in A/C playing black jack, front row seats at a Lakers game instead of sitting in the nose bleed seats, etc.

At least when you are buying premium sports cards you actually get something back in return besides a memory.

Heck, I once heard that Larry Flint spends an average of one million dollars per day gambling when he's in Vegas.

Congrats Chris on having the guts and vision to pay that kind of money on the card and shame on the others who try and knock him!

As long as I live, I sure hope I don't hear the words 'guts and vision' used to describe paying 7k for a Toby Atwell card again.

In any case, a card is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Some people pay $100,000,000 for a painting and some want to have the best possible baseball card set they can obtain. Different strokes for different folks.

Ok fellas, I guess my comment was out of line. I apoligize to you chris..no hard feelings, Yes 7k is a lot of money for myself and not much compaired to others, so realizing this I should keep a comment like that off of the board. I am new to the hobby and forget that tuff cards out there command premiums. Well again I am sorry and admit I was wrong.
  • apology accepted, best of luck in your collecting endeavors, at whatever price point

Is a population count of thirteen PSA 8s considered low pop?

  • highendhighend Posts: 534
ANY card is only worth as much someone is willing to pay. 7g's is indeed alot of cash to lay down on a common. if i had the money i wouldn't hesitate to drop 7 g's on one card. i think someone on these boards said "the best gifts are the ones you give to yourself". enjoy , because you only go through once...

For a widely-collected set like 53 Bowman, 13 is pretty low. What drives the price even higher is that there are no 9s (or 10s I assume). Often if there are higher grades available, the sky's-the-limit bidders will wait and go after them. With so few decent examples out there, the best available is just as good as the best possible.

All value is relative. Obviously Chris R is not an idiot. I personally believe that the 1953 Bowman color set is the nicest set ever made, and finding nice high grade cards is like looking for hens teeth. I will go further to predict that rare, high grade baseball cards from popular sets are an excellent investment in the long run, especially ones that are pop 1 or 2 and not likely to increase. And even if you lose money on them, who cares, it was a fun ride and therefore money well spent in our all too short short lives.

    Live long and prosper.

  • Koby,

I think that 13 is low pop depending on how many people are collecting a given set. I would expect that this card just never comes available for sale. I've been buying psa 8's from the 53 bowman set and what this tells me is that I won't be going for an all "8" set.

  • I would NEVER pay that kind of money for a 1953 common no matter what the pop is or how much money i had (i'd rather buy a nice Cobb) but if that is Chris's or anyone elses cup of tea then more power to them. In years to come when that card is sold (and they are all sold sometime) he may loose his a$$ or he could make a killing on it you never know but if he wanted the card and had the coin to spend on it then good for him.

He does have a KILLER 53 Bowman set going.imageimage

  • i too agree that chris is no idiot (cuz if he is then i'm an idiot too for prices i've paid for some 53 bowman 8's and 9's)...in this case, he was bidding against john branca, who is close to finishing his set and had just beaten him out for the Lockman card. It does strike me as odd though that i've paid less for star 9's in the set with pop's of 4-6 than i've paid for 8 commons with pop's of 10-13...though the price of 9 commons with ultra-low pop's (1-2) has skyrocketed...probably up 7-8x since i started buying 9's in 2000.

For people trying to complete the set in 8's, don't get freaked out by some of these recent ebay prices...these things go in phases...i think i paid $175 for my atwell, but paid like $3000 for a Del Ennis, which now turns up pretty routinely for a few hundred bucks.
Got any PSA 9's from the '53 Bowman Color set?
