GOETZ: Opus 189 Nikita's Daughters of Fate

K-189 NIKITA’S DAUGHTERS OF FATE (Nikitas Schicksalstöchter). 1916, Cast AE, 82.7mm, Gussfrisch, thin planchet.

On the occasion of the defeat of Montenegro in 1916. Three of King Nicholas’ of Montenegro daughters represent evil symbols of countries they adopted by marriage. Militza, wife of Grand Duke Peter of Russia carries the flaming torch, Stana, wife of Grand Duke Nicolas of Russia carries the key of death, and Elena, Queen of Italy carries the asp.

Inscription on the reverse “The defeat of the Black Mountains (of Montenegro). World War 1916.” Bloody Sword with three Asp's. Goetz didn't mince around with his symbolism on this one....

This one made me go back and review some WWI geography/history. Nice bit of history is captured there - a lot of bad feelings between the southern balkans and the Austro-Hungarian empire (and their ally Germany) are apparent.

Thanks Boz...I have a major update to do to my web gallery since I have acquired about 60 pieces since my last update. This should take another month or so to get the images done and then I need to read up on HTML so I can include at least the specs for each medal at a minimum. This winter is when I plan on doing a major overhaul and getting the gallery to start looking like a web site.

Is there a way to turn off the slide-show on your site Scott so as to spend as much time as I like looking at a medal?

I'll look "behind-the-scenes" on the source page to see where that little sucker lies....this "functionality" is slapped into the gallery with the canned process I use in PS7.

Cosmic, do you know where it is located?

Ten seconds is just not long enough to take in some of those medals.image

Gorgeous!! They don't show up often in nice condition either. The bidding on the few choice ones I've seen have left me in the dust. image

Cache, another awesome medal image As for the code, it is the last line in the HEAD tag of every page (in frame)--meta http-equiv="refresh" content="10;URL=K%20%2012.html"--which makes it jump to the next page. Change the # in "content" to change the delay. I worked out a sloppily coded (java) alternate for your slide show a while back.. don't think I ever passed it on. Anyway, it is pretty labor intensive, but lets you have the slide show effect and pages people can stare at image Have to dig it up.. remind me if I disappear again image
