Sets that have no 10's (last try)

Was in a PM discussion with a fellow board member. Is it possible for a "set" to have no "10's" possible, ever?

Meaning if I opened a book in an attic and inside was a 190-whatever that was placed in that book the day it came off the printer, and it was perfect in every way.

Or is it just "known" that there will never be a 10 in certain sets?

There has never been a Cracker Jack card graded PSA 10 - despite "improvement" on numerous 1915s by some talented individuals. With toning, etc. - 8s are very diffifcult, and 9s are a stretch. 1914 CJ will almost definitely never see a 10. 1915 might perhaps one day see a 10 from the "presentation set" type things that they offered nearly 90 years ago.

I don't think any Old Judge cards have ever graded PSA 10 - although there was one SGC 98 that was purportedly removed from an Old Judge pouch just a few years ago and somehow, miraculously, obtained the GEM MINT grade....

1955 parkhurst hockey will probably never see a 10? a 9 is a stretch and probably not many of them either! the sgc 96 toe blake was my submission and to date that is the only 96 in the set, i am sorry i think there was a plante graded 96 to. i bet there is less then 5 psa 9's but i don't have access to the pop report, i do remember a cahan i think, that was a quaker oats for sale as a psa 9.if a lumley psa 9 ever came up for sale i hope for my childrens college fund its from me.

Highest grade Topps Venezuelan (1959-1968) is an 8. In fact, there's only three of those out of the 378 PSA graded.

Then again, no one has attempted to complete a graded (or maybe raw) set.

    Morrells:
    Highest 1959 is a "7"
    Highest '60 & '61 is "8"
Probably none better to be found; doubt if there are too many 40+ year old packs of bologna laying around.image

Any of the 1920's golf sets, not many cards graded thus far I will grant you, but 9's are about as common as a cactus in Alaska

BUT lets say there is. And I find it. Can it be given a 10? I realize I may not be wording this right. So bare with me. If there is a set that has no 10 can there be a 10 out there or is it impossible, period, no ifs ands or buts for certain sets? It was explained to me that there is a probability that some sets may not have a 10. And so there is a possibility that a card from that set no matter how nice will never get a 10. Making, say a 7 the highest grade possible for that set.

I would guess that it would have to be cards that were produced around the turn of the century, obviously the the technology back then was somewhat primitive compaired to later years when technology got better, I would be willing to bet sometime soon cards will be manufactered and advertised as "Perfect Mint" cards with the factory maybe having a computer generated inspection line before the cards are packaged and shipped. Im not up to snuff on the turn of the century cards as far as the pop reports but I would guess the production system would seriously prevent any of those cards from being "perfect"...Anyways who knows for sure?
  • AknotAknot Posts: 1,196 ✭✭
hmmmm so a 190whatever card can not have perfect corners, perfect centering, color, edges, etc? And are people "set" that there can never be that perfect 190whatever card?

Since a 10 is a MINT card with exceptional eye appeal, I can't imagine a 1943 MP & Co. card ever getting a 10. Those cards have the eye appeal of Mickey Lolich in a thong.

Seriously, I would be shocked to see any early punch-out card (Batter-Ups, 1951 All-Stars) ever get a 10. Likewise with many of the rare late 19th and early 20th century issues.

I haven't checked the pop. report - are there any T-205 PSA 10s?

And what is the name of that set in the registry? Suggestions?

Looks like Mickey let himself go a bit in the later years. Kind of like the Elvis question - which do your prefer the pre peanut butter and banana sandwich Elvis or the post PB and banana Elvis?

BTW - that is nasty........but humorous none the less.

Well - I shouldn't say much, as a friend of mine owned one of these once, but do you happen to remember the (two, I think) CSA 10 T-205 cards? When they were first "discovered", they created a big stir in the hobby....

No I don't remember. Were they doctored?

Wasn't there a large group (more than two) of high grade T205s graded by CSA? If they were the same ones, I think they were originally rejected by PSA, graded by CSA and auctioned by that guy in Chicago that was busted soon thereafter for bad jerseys.
