Barber Nuts --- A sweet 05-O (She's back)

Dave99BDave99B Posts: 8,529 ✭✭✭✭✭
Any guesses on the grade of my raw 05-O Barber half?

Spotted this fella at a show last week, but passed on it. Price was too steep.
Couldn't sleep all week, so I called the dealer and found out it was still available,
and paid his kings random for it (after consulting with ARCO)....

It's heading off to ANACS later this week...

(LIBERTY is very strong - doesn't show well in these lame pics....)

It better come back VF20 or better, or I REALLY overpaid...

    Dave,

I think you will be okay sending it to ANACS for a Vf-20, but I would be more inclined to say F-15 if sent to PCGS.

On second thought it might catch a 20 at PCGS?

Jim - Can you update your post and say "AU-50" ? THANKS! image

Seriously, it's a great half, with neat color. I'm in love with all original O-mint Barbers. They
    aren't making them any more....

Actually passing on a coin at a show and later calling them to buy it is more common than you might think. I've done it twice from the Santa Clara show. I didn't wait a week though. I called them the next day on their cell phone at the show. Then of course it cost me more to have the darn thing shipped. I always wondered if they were laughing about it, although they did seem to hold it in and not gloat while talking to me and seeing me the next time. image

Looks like you got yourself a nice original honest coin there. Congratulations.

Here's another sweet '05-O Barber ... this one's only worth twenty-five cents as legal tender though. It's currently in the inventory of Legend Numismatics. The coin is graded PCGS MS66 and is in my opinion nicer than the one graded MS67 which was auctioned not too long ago. This '05-O was formerly in the formidable Barber set formed by Dale Krueger.

That's a MONSTER quarter. The 05-O is a sleeper, expecially in Fine - XF.

I wonder if they'll trade straight across if I kick in $100?

  • Dave-
Looks possibly cleaned long ago and re-toned.. but hard to tell from a pic.
Reverse looks F-15 but ANACS will definitely grade VF20 without a doubt as long as the LIBERTY is complete.

Both PCGS and NGC's are more conservative on mid-grade Barber halves in my opinion.

    Here's an example of a 1912-s NGC VF20:

    image

And I think ANACS would have graded this.. VF25 without a doubt, IMHO.

Dave - tough date for sure. The 1905-O is found weakly struck very often. I have a VF35 and it seems on this issue to have more detail on the obverse than the reverse. Usually it is the other way around on many of the dates.

Liberty looks VF30 from the scan but the reverse detail looks weaker from a poor strike and it has the technical detail of what a fine would look like.

Trying to factor the technical grade and factoring in strike I would say the coin grades VF20-25. Just looking at LIBERTY it almost seems VF30.

Great input everyone. Looks like we are settling in around the VF20-25 ballpark. I’d be OK with that. The look of the coin is so awesome, I’d be happy with a 20. I’d hate to be stuck with a lowly “fine”!

The obverse does show much more detail. Thx Tyler for the O-mint strike info. I assumed that was the case, since the quarters often exhibit the same characteristic.

  • At first glance it looked vg, but after looking at the headband closer I'd say it's a vf 20 or so.

That 05-O quarter is outstanding. That coin would set you back a ways $$$.

OK, it's all packaged up --- off it goes to ANACS tomorrow, along with some other odds and ends.

Yes, Economy Service - I'm in no rush.

I'll report back in the Fall!

Dave, that response is not far fetched with economy at ANACS. A freind just got his Jan submission back two weeks ago?
  • Dave99BDave99B Posts: 8,529 ✭✭✭✭✭
Jim - No kidding. I struggled with choosing the service, but opted (as usual) to go cheap. The other Barbers I am sending in are also VF, but are only worth in the $60 - $80 range. I just couldn't justify the regular service.

    Dave,
That is a definite VF20 even with the lack of detail on the eagle. The eagle detail is more indicative of a strong F15, however the obverse detail will counterbalance that if the grader at ANACS knows how to grade Barbers properly. Laurel wreath detail looks VF20 and LIBERTY looks VF30.

ANACS should grade this as VF20... perhaps VF25 if the grader is in a generous mood.

PCGS would incorrectly grade this as F15. Good choice to go with ANACS on this one. I think they are more likely to get this one right.

50 days have come and gone since I sent this half dollar to ANACS (Economy Service). It only took them 4 days to cash my check!

How many more days will I have to wait? Any guesses??? The suspense is killing me....

Sometimes anacs takes 90-100 days to do economy's.

It wouldn't surprise me if you have to wait another month. ANACS Economy is slow and they will not hesitate to tell you so if you ask. (I know, I did at the time of my last submission.)
My guess for the grade is VF-20, even though the reverse is only F15. The coin looks original to me.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • Can someone tell me why it seems barber coinage is abundant in low grades, but finding nice examples
in higher grades (xf-au) is tough. Was it because they circulated more than other series?

Most barber coinage took a heavy beating in circulation. A very "used" coin. Easy to find most coins in good-vg, but those fine-xf grades are really tough. Probably easier to find au/unc examples of certain dates than a nice wholesome vf.

On your coin Dave, that's the type of coin I like to buy paying strong fine money, and hope (pray? image) it gets a vf at the services. Like you said, tougher date, and more uncommon than most realize.

I hope you get the vf out of that coin, but that reverse is going to hurt you I think. Don't forget to update us all at the end of August when you receive the results. image

If it's only been 50 days and you sent it in economy, you probably have anywhere from two to six weeks to go.

    Dave,

Knowing that ANACS economy grading is 90 days, I'm a bit surpised that you didn't go for regular service for a couple of bucks more.

    The coin is a solid VF 20. ( Obv = 25; Rev = 15 ).

I'm still looking for that date myself !

I submitted 41 coins to ANACS at the Baltimore show on Friday, 7/9. There were returned to me two days ago, 7/28. Cost was about $11/coin, plus shipping. There seemed to be no end to the submissions that they were taking at the show. ANACS does make a bona fide effort to meet their promised turnaround times. Of course, with economy service, there are no promises.
  • Dave99BDave99B Posts: 8,529 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well.....most everyone on this thread was right on, it came back VF20. You guys are good!

Just got it back (and a few others) from ANACS.

93 days for the Economy Service.

I frankly question some of the other grades I received on the other items I sent (some were too high, some too low), but this one seems right on.

Glad to hear you landed the VF 20.

93 days sound a bit long though.
