Saturday Mail Call: A nice 1973P Ike

A very nice coin from fellow board member GrandAm - the coin is in an old green PCGS 65 holder, accurately graded I believe, but what's neat about it is that in addition to kaboodles of luster, the coin has a gun metal blue/grey hue to it - not your typical brownish goldish tone that Ikes tend to get. In addition there is a swath of gold toning on the obverse and some gold highlights on the reverse, but less noticeable. 73P's are hard to come by in gem condition out of mint sets. D's seem to have better luck. Enjoy!

    Looks familar!!!!

    A nice coin, particularly for a 73-P.

    They are tough!

The luster on this coin also captivates. Something else you want to see on Gem Ikes

Actually Frank, yours looks a lot better than mine. I see less contact marks on your 73-P. But of course I am very over picky of my coins I Look at mine to be about a 64. I love the color in your Ikes too!!

Would you post a larger pic of the obverse? I have a couple of 73P Ikes that look like that level of quality and I've been considering sending them in. Wouldn't mind comparing them to yours. image

The '73-P tends to suffer from poor strikes and the D from excessive marking.

This is an excellent example from the top few percent of available coins, but the coin does appear sometimes
with a little less marking and a significantly better strike.

Sam, how about the other 73 coins? From what I've seen, the quarters seem to be available in 66 but not much higher and most of the dimes and nickels I've seen hover at 66 and below (no FS and FT on the ones I've paid attention to as well). Are they generally tougher in higher grade than the 1972 series?

All the '73's are tougher to find in the mint sets in very high grade than the '72's.
The D quarter is far more difficult than the '72-D and is most uncommon in PL. The
Philly quarter does appear very nice but only rarely. In the old days gem Ikes were
occasionally seen but choice and superb gems weren't. The nickels have a far lower
average quality but the D is sometimes nice. Both the cents can be found in high
grade but the Philly is plagued by marking. Dimes and halfs tend to be a little better
quality but nice specimens are not common.

The '72 set is probably the best made of all the later date sets and gems of some coins
like the D quarter tend to be common in them.
