SEE THE REAL BEN...Would the "Real" Ben Franklin Please Stand-Up

labloverlablover Posts: 3,632 ✭✭✭✭✭
Recently aquired this 1960-P MS66 Franklin. It's a Pop 12/0 coin...my first "None Finer". Anyway, here's two images of the coin. One is from the auction house and the other is my scan. Can you guess which one is the REAL Ben Franklin?

I would say that the left one is more natural colorwise. The right one is more enhanced technicolor. Frankie's got a bald spot and a skin condition on his scalp.

Ditto, and you should biopsy that scalp lesionimage

I think this peculiarity lends a distinguishing feature to ole Ben.image

The first one is closer to the real Ben - and he's in really nice shape! Congratulations on a great find fellow pooch lubber! image

    Thanks Frank.

Agreed. However, for this thread I thought it best not to show the slab. That would take the fun out of guessing which one is the REAL Ben.

  • What causes that "textile" or fabric pattern on 1960-P Franklins. You can see it very well on that coin underlying the color. Was only one die involved? Was it the planchets?? I only see this phenomenon on 1960-P's. Frank? Lucy?? Anyone know???

Great question. I was wondering the same. It was one of the features of this coin that really caught my eye. Maybe one of the experts can shed some light.

That is a very nice Franklin, Jim. I will say that the picture on the left is closer to what the coin really looks like.image

My guess, and it's just a guess, is that the pattern is the result of the way the mint set paper came into contact with (part of) the coin's surface.

there was no mint set paper used in 1960...

this is a question many Frankie collectors wonder...

I have owned 4 of these type of textile toners, 2 of them I pulled from the cello package......

    I like them...

    Yours is awesome...

I would say the textile type toning pattern is caused by striations in the mint set cellophane. Look at the cellophane with a loop. I also have to question whether the cellophane was punctured? By the way that's a super looking coin! mike image

A lot of these coins came from mint sets with this type of pattern already on them - maybe it wasn't the paper, but perhaps even the plastic on the mint set may have had something to do with it. I notice the same pattern on some 64 halves as well and it could be two things. One, possibly the coins resided in a canvas holder or bin before being transferred to mint sets, or perhaps the plastic may have imparted some of this pattern. I notice that on some 60's mint sets the plastic has something of a texture to it. I haven't checked close enough to determine if there are lines on the plastic or not though. Either way - helluva coin! image

Nice coin photo of a pretty coin on the left, the right coin photo makes it look AT.

I didn't think that was "textile" toning, I assumed it was photo or scan artifact. If it's really there, it's pretty cool. Actually, it's pretty cool, period!

Thanks to all for the kind comments concerning my new baby.
Guess it's time to reveal the "TRUE" coin. When I first saw the coin in the resent ANR auction I was taken by the textile like texture and the color. But, when the coin arrived I almost wet my pants. It was sooooooo much better than the auction house image. I know some will not believe this but, the coin on the left is from the auction house and is quite pale compared to the actual coin. The coin on the right is my scan and it looks just like what you see, no kidding...it really does. I did nothing to tweek the color just scanned the coin on a very slight angle. The luster just booms off ole Ben.

  • BTW...anyone who appreciates toned Frankies owes it to themselves to go to the anrcoins.com website and peruse the Koshgarian halves.

I was delighted to see an old friend there: the 52-D NGC MS66 wondercoin that I made many years ago!
