Results of 1803 $1 submission - What's next step?

WindycityWindycity Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭✭✭
PCGS has spoken. They have determined this 1803 dollar is cleaned. This coin was originally submitted to ANACS 20 or so years ago and I have the paperwork with their grade of XF. What would your next step be??? Should I resubmit to ANACS with the old paperwork and ask to have it put in a modern holder? Submit raw? NGC?

NGC most likely wont holder it either, being cleaned.

ANACS has gotten tougher and I am not sure youll get it in a problem free holder with them. They will net grade it. You can send in the old certificate that accompanied the coin originally, but I dont think that will sway them in anyway.

I think some method of mild artificial toning to try to cover up the cleaning is in order image

Is there a particular reason why you want to have your 1803 Bust Dollar certified and slabbed? Are you planning on selling it soon?

Many Bust Coin collectors prefer to keep these coins raw so that they can examine them closely and also have access to the lettered edge of the coin. I am just curious... image

Slabbing is a matter of value. XF cleaned net VF is far less valuable than XF.

put it in a kraft coin envelope for a few years, let the white areas tone some more, maybe help cover some of the hairlines then resubmit the coin.

ANACS from 20 years ago is different from ANACS today. 20 years ago, it was owned by the ANA where now, it is owned by (I believe) AMOS Press, the parent company of Coin World. "Should I resubmit to ANACS" It wouldn't be a resubmission. The best thing to do, if it must be in a holder, is send it to ANACS and they will either holder it as a no problem coin or net grade it for cleaning. The paperwork stating it is XF isn't going to do you anygood with submitting it to any service to include ANACS.

Do you think it's cleaned in a manner, or to a degree that warrants a bodybag? If not, resubmit it. Shock of all shocks, PCGS frequently screws up.

Baley has suggested a good long-term practical solution that could certainly work. However, if you feel compelled to act more quickly you could either take Russ's suggestion to resubmit to PCGS, or try ANACS.

Another option may be to try NGC. I have been told by Bust Coin specialists that NGC is a bit more forgiving for certain types of dings and hairlines than is PCGS. Most would agree that if they can't get their coin in a PCGS slab, then their 2nd choice would be NGC, then perhaps ICG or ANACS as a 3rd/4th choice.

Its a circulated bust dollar give me a break. If you have not cleaned it thats at least 20 years since it was cleaned and the coin does not have that all white just cleaned look.
Send it to ngc see if they slab it if you don't like anacs.
I would guess if you sent it to pcgs enough times it would eventually get graded.

This isn't a bad looking coin and is certainly "marketable". It doesn't make much sense as to why PCGS would bodybag it for cleaning. I've seen coins in PCGS holders with OBVIOUS harsh cleaning so I think they're being a little inconsistent. IMHO, I wouldn't have it slabbed anyway. Coins like this seem wrong in slabs. You should be able to hold it and inspect the edge lettering etc.

Try the resubmit thing. I have had two coins on different submissions come back as cleaned only to later be graded as mint state--go figure.

    Started as an NGC MS64RB.

    DNC the first time.
Bodybag, altered surfaces the second time.
    MS65BN the third time.

What are you trying to acomplish? If you just want it in a holder submit it to NGC and request that if it can't be encapsulated by them to have NCS holder it- they won't put a grade on it though. If you are trying to sell it I might try PCGS a time or two again in the next few months. Looks like a nice coin to me. mike image
  • PCGS' policies do NOT state that a coin will automatically be bodybagged if it has been cleaned. PCGS does indeed accept coins -- especially rare ones like this -- that may have been lightly cleaned. PCGS tries to accept the same coins that are generally accepted in the marketplace as fairly original. MORE than 90% of all silver dollars have been cleaned at one time or another. I would resubmit it to PCGS.

Also, I agree with DarkTone and NGC/NCS option.

I also agree with Mike's suggestion quoted above, unless you really want it only in a PCGS holder, in which case you could take Russ's advice.

It's a nice looking Bust Dollar, and as Baley suggested it will get nicer looking with age, if properly cared for.

  • Who is the individual that rendered this opinion, and what is his knowledge, that he (or,to be politicallycorrect-she)can render a less important consideration historically or value based,of this piece? After all, this is an originally 85,600+or- mintage piece. How many survivors can there be in this condition? After all, the piece could have laid in an old pine or oak drawer, and would have shown obvious surface changes, that would not be noted, or dropped in the mud and wiped on a horsehair shirt. How much? Send it to three board members, let them render opinion. If you want to sell it, true collectors are ready and willing. If you want the profit side maxed, put it on e-bay with a reserve. You can sell this piece without a problem.I wonder if the person (or co.) that gave opinion has same pieces of their own, and vested interest in perceived pop. reports?
