PCGS WHINES IN FULL PAGECOIN WORLD AD

Here we go again. As Rodney King said "Can't we just all get along?" Why did they have to take out a whole page ad and again pronounce that respect can't be bought.
PCGS had bought it for the past 3 years. If it doesnt mean anything why rehash it again in the leading trade publication?
PCGS is going to push all the dealers away with this behavior. I dont know if the ship is sinking or has just lost its captain, but somebody better grab the wheel soon.
Ad is in the APRIL 12, 2004 COIN WORLD page 61.

We know the following: all endorsements can be bought. All of them. Sports, politics, entertainment. Why would coins be any different? For enough money you can hire any expert to say anything--why should a "club" of dealers (PNG) be any different? I still think it's funny that NGC is peddling their wares on HSN

HRH must really be pissed. He again states that respect must be earned not bought. Why the heck was he trying to buy it then? Then he says that the sticker on the holder is worthless. Why did he display it so prominately on PCGS holders?
I have a feeling this story is going to be played out all year.

This is no joke. I couldn't believe myself. I actually had to put the paper down and close my eyes thinking it was just a bad dream. I would have thought they could have put it behind them by now--just chalk it up to experience.
I really don't know who they are trying to fool with this respect can't be bought thing. I mean, they tried to buy it . Talk about biting the hand that feeds, they are going to drive every dealer away from them. Soon they will only be grading statehood quarters and TomB's favorite Sacs.
I think next week this will be the cover story in Coin World.
Placing full page ads like this does nothing to promote our hobby. I really was shocked when I saw it.

I frequent both boards (PCGS/NGC) because I like both communities, and enjoy talking to the collectors on both. I do that for my own satisfaction. In all candor, it has nothing to do with the companies. It has only to do with the members who post to those forums. The host is incidental.
I also buy holdered coins without regard to which holder (if any), again for my benefit, and not the benefit of the companies. I like coins, and the plastic is part of the marketing of some coins, but the holder is incidental.
I sometimes submit coins I intend to sell. I do that to improve their saleability to my benefit. The TPG is the beneficiary of my submission, but their profit is incidental. It is my profit I'm concerned with.
I guess my point is that as interesting as it is to watch all the posturing, politics, and inner workings of the industry, none of it really impacts my enjoyment of the boards or the hobby. I visit the forums to talk to other collectors, dealers, and friends. I think many collectors forget that we (the customers) are not really joined at the hip with ANY TPG, and that they're incidental. May the one that does the best job of satisfying customers be rewarded, and may the ones who don't try harder. Coins in unpopular holders are but a single blow away from liberation. I have no vested interest in the companies beyond the services they render, so as far as I'm concerned, WE can "all get along". THEY can't, but WE can.

Actually, I also agree. It looks petty and childish, and ill-advised from a business standpoint. But, to think - as so many over at sleepy hollow do - that it signals the beginning of the end and spells doom for PCGS is just plain laughable.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I own slabs from the big 3 and submit to the big three. I have very beautiful coins in all holders that I know would cross at any service. IMHO all TPG's are the same. There are posters on both boards whose opinions I respect and those that I couldnt care less.
My point in starting this thread was that I can't understand why this issue is such a big deal to PCGS. Obviously it means alot more to PCGS than they are letting on. But I do know that this is not beneficial to the hobby and certainly will not instill confidence for those new to the hobby.
And as far as the name calling. I am very disappointed.

Based on your carefully chosen headline and absurd 'the ship is sinking' argument, it appears to thinking individuals that your point was to post a juvenile slam PCGS thread.
In the future, if you wish to engage in an intellectual debate on a topic, perhaps you should make some intelligent points and present them like an adult.
